W&M News and Notes

- Saturday's game is the fifth in an 11-day stretch for the Tribe. W&M won the first two games of the sequence over Hampton (81-65) at home and at UNCW (69-67). The Tribe is coming off a three-games-in-six-days road trip. W&M is one of only four CAA teams to play a three-game CAA road trip in 2023 and the only one to do it in a six-day stretch.

- Sophomore Gabe Dorsey is leading the Tribe in scoring in CAA play at nearly 12 points per game, which ranks 21st in the league. He has produced the top-two scoring games of his career and has scored in double figures in four of seven CAA games. Dorsey tallied 21 vs. Hofstra, knocking down seven 3-pointers, and notched 18 at Delaware behind six 3-pointers. In league action, Dorsey is shooting 47.9% from 3, hitting 3.3 triples per game.

- Freshman Charlie Williams was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week on Monday. Williams made a huge impact off the bench in the win at UNCW, scoring a career-high 15 points to go with four rebounds. He scored 12 first-half points with the Tribe's starting front court of Noah Collier and Ben Wight limited to 11 total minutes due to foul trouble. Williams was 11-of-12 at the free throw line vs. UNCW. Over the last three games, he is averaging nine points and three rebounds per game shooting 66.7%.

- W&M turned in its best defensive performance of the season in the win at UNCW on Jan. 14. The Green and Gold held the Seahawks to 37.8% shooting, its best against a DI opponent this season. More impressive, the Tribe limited UNCW to 21.7% shooting in the second half and without a field goal over the game's final five minutes.

- In short order, Dorsey has established himself as one of the top shooters in the country. He ranks 16th nationally in 3-point % (44.4), 26th in 3's per game (3.0) and 31st in effective FG% (63.8). He leads the CAA in 3-point % and is second in triples per game. Dorsey has three games of five or more 3's this season.

- Junior Noah Collier nearly averages a double-double on the season at 9.0 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. He owns six double-doubles on the year, which ranks second in the CAA and 52nd nationally. He is third in the CAA and 64th nationally in rebounding.

- Graduate guard Anders Nelson has been a catalyst for W&M's offense. He leads the CAA in assists (4.8) and ranks second in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.1). Those numbers are 54th and 91st nationally, respectively. Nelson is eighth in the country in assist rate (37.2), according to KenPom.com. Assist rate divides the number of assists by the field goals made by the player's teammates while he is on the court. Nelson also leads the Tribe and ranks 24th in the CAA at 11 points per game.

- W&M turned the ball over just nine time against a UNCW team that leads the CAA in turnover margin. On the year, the Tribe is averaging just 12.4 turnovers per game in 2022-23, which is a significant improvement from a season ago. The Green and Gold averaged 16.2 turnovers per game in 2021-22, the sixth-worst mark in the country. After not having a single game of 10 or fewer turnovers last season, W&M has eight such games this season.

- Rebounding, especially on the offensive end, has been a focus for the Tribe. Overall, the Tribe ranks fifth in the CAA in rebounding (34.8), sixth in the CAA in rebounding margin (+1.5) and fourth in offensive rebounding. The Tribe's 11.3 offensive rebounds per game are its most since 2006 (12.1). W&M ranks 94th nationally in offensive rebounding.

- The Tribe shot 58.7% from the field in its win over Hampton on Wednesday night. It marked the program's best shooting effort vs. D1 opponent since Jan. 2, 2020 when it shot 62.5% in a win at Hofstra. W&M's 81 points vs. Hampton were also its most against a D1 opponent this season.

- The Tribe was called for 35 fouls in its win at UNCW on Jan. 14. It marked the third most in school history – the most in a win – and tied for the most in the country this season. W&M is the first team in college basketball over the last five years to win a game in regulation when committing 35 or more fouls.

- Four former Tribe standouts are in the NBA as either a player or a coach. 2020 graduate Nathan Knight, who was the National Mid-Major Player of the Year in 2020, signed a two-year deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves in the offseason. He spent last season with the Timberwolves after playing his rookie season with the Atlanta Hawks. Jim Moran '01 is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Detroit Pistons, while Sean Sheldon '16 joined the Utah Jazz as an assistant coach this offseason. Daniel Dixon '17 is an assistant coach with the Oklahoma City Blue, the NBA G-League program of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Another nine former Tribe players are currently playing professionally in Europe.
