W&M News and Notes

- While Delaware won both meetings with the Tribe last season and leads the all-time series, W&M has won 10 of the last 14 contests between the two teams dating back to 2016. The Tribe also owns victories in four of the last six meetings in Newark.

- Thursday's game at Delaware is the third of a three-games-in-six-days road trip for the Tribe. W&M is one of only four CAA teams with a three-game road trip in league play this season and the only program that must do it in a six-day stretch. The Tribe won the first game of the trip at UNCW, 69-67, on Saturday. The road trip is also part of a five-games-in-10 days stretch. W&M is currently 2-1 in the first three games of the sequence and hosts North Carolina A&T to wrap it up on Saturday.

- Freshman Charlie Williams was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week on Monday. Williams made a huge impact off the bench in the win at UNCW, scoring a career-high 15 points to go with four rebounds. He scored 12 first-half points with the Tribe's starting front court of Noah Collier and Ben Wight limited to 11 total minutes due to foul trouble. Williams was 11-of-12 at the free throw line vs. UNCW. It marked the fifth most made free throws for a freshman nationally this season and the most for a rookie forward. He followed with eight points at Charleston on Monday.

- Over the last two games, the Tribe has limited its opponents to just 38% shooting from the field. W&M turned in its best defensive performance of the season in the win at UNCW. The Green and Gold held the Seahawks to 37.8% shooting, its best against a DI opponent this season. More impressive, the Tribe limited UNCW to 21.7% shooting in the second half and without a field goal over the game's final five minutes.

- In short order, sophomore Gabe Dorsey has established himself as one of the top shooters in the country. He ranks 21st nationally in 3-point % (43.4), 50th in 3's per game (2.8) and 49th in effective FG% (62.4). He leads the CAA in 3-point % and is second in triples per game. Dorsey set a career-high with seven 3-pointers against Hofstra, which ranked seventh on W&M's single-season list.

- Junior Noah Collier nearly averages a double-double on the season at 9.2 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. He owns six double-doubles on the year, which ranks second in the CAA and 45th nationally. He is third in the CAA and 57th nationally in rebounding. He owns a double-double in two of his last three games.

- The Tribe was called for 35 fouls in its win at UNCW on Saturday. It marked the third most in school history – the most in a win – and tied for the most in the country this season. W&M is the first team in college basketball over the last five years to win a game in regulation when committing 35 or more fouls.

- W&M turned the ball over just nine time against a UNCW team that leads the CAA in turnover margin. On the year, the Tribe is averaging just 12.2 turnovers per game in 2022-23, which is a significant improvement from a season ago. The Green and Gold averaged 16.2 turnovers per game in 2021-22, the sixth-worst mark in the country. After not having a single game of 10 or fewer turnovers last season, W&M has eight such games this season.

- Graduate guard Anders Nelson has been a catalyst for W&M's offense. He leads the CAA in assists (4.7) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.0). He ranks 53rd and 97th nationally in those categories, respectively. Nelson is 10th in the country in assist rate (36.9), according to KenPom.com. Assist rate divides the number of assists by the field goals made by the player's teammates while he is on the court. Nelson also leads the Tribe and ranks 23rd in the CAA at 11.4 points per game.

- Rebounding, especially on the offensive end, has been a focus for the Tribe. Overall, the Tribe ranks fifth in the CAA in rebounding (35.3), sixth in the CAA in rebounding margin (+1.9) and fourth in offensive rebounding. The Tribe's 11.7 offensive rebounds per game are its most since 2006 (12.1). W&M ranks 78th nationally in offensive rebounding.

- The Tribe shot 58.7% from the field in its win over Hampton on Wednesday night. It marked the program's best shooting effort vs. D1 opponent since Jan. 2, 2020 when it shot 62.5% in a win at Hofstra. W&M's 81 points vs. Hampton were also its most against a D1 opponent this season.

- Four former Tribe standouts are in the NBA as either a player or a coach. 2020 graduate Nathan Knight, who was the National Mid-Major Player of the Year in 2020, signed a two-year deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves in the offseason. He spent last season with the Timberwolves after playing his rookie season with the Atlanta Hawks. Jim Moran '01 is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Detroit Pistons, while Sean Sheldon '16 joined the Utah Jazz as an assistant coach this offseason. Daniel Dixon '17 is an assistant coach with the Oklahoma City Blue, the NBA G-League program of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Another nine former Tribe players are currently playing professionally in Europe.
