Four School Records Highlight First Day at the VCU Shootout

RICHMOND, Va. – It was a red-number, record-setting type of day for William & Mary men's golf on Monday at the VCU Shootout. The Tribe bettered four school records led by graduate student Matthew Feinstein's masterful first 36 holes.

The Tribe fired a school-record 16-under par 272 in the second round at The Country Club of Virginia's Tuckahoe Creek Course to top the previous program mark of 13-under 275 set in 2015 at the Loyola Intercollegiate. Coupled with its opening round of 3-under 285, the Green and Gold shattered the previous 36-hole school record of 13-under 563, finishing Monday at 19-under 557. W&M sits in sixth place after 36 holes, but just three shots out of third place.

Feinstein highlighted the Tribe's day, equaling the program record for both 18 and 36 holes. After shooting a team-best 3-under 69 in the opening round, the McLean, Va., native fired a school-record tying 65 that featured seven birdies compared to zero bogeys over the second 18. It is the third 65 in school history. His 10-under 134 for the day tied the record set by Alex Hicks at the Joe Agee Invitational in 2013-14. Feinstein is one stroke off the lead in second entering Tuesday's final round.

Sophomore Logan Hunter turned in a pair of rounds under par on Monday, shooting the 11th-best 36-hole score in program history. Following an opening-round 71, he equaled his collegiate best with a 4-under 68 in round two. Hunter, who along with Feinstein, was one of 13 players with 10 or more birdies through the opening two rounds. He was 3-over through the opening four holes of his second round, before coming to life with five birdies and an eagle on the 18th hole. Hunter sits in a share of 19th at 5-under 139.

Both junior Will Rieck and sophomore Jake Newman finished under par for the first 36 holes and sit in a share of 39th at 1-under 143. After an opening round 75, Rieck shot his collegiate-best round of 68 in round two. He tallied five birdies compared to one bogey in the second round.

Newman shot even par 72 in round one and followed up with a 1-under 71 in round two. Both the 18 and 36-hole totals were the best of his collegiate career as he birdied five holes on the day.

Freshman Charlie Bundy rounded out the Tribe lineup shooting 4-over 148, including a 1-over 73 in the opening round.

VCU leads the event after two rounds behind a 27-under 549, one shot ahead of Rhode Island. W&M is just three shots behind third-place George Washington (22-under 554).

The final round of the VCU Shootout tees off at 8:30 a.m., and the W&M will be paired with Old Dominion and Charleston Southern.
