The William & Mary women's track & field team took home field advantage and hit paydirt in nearly every event it competed in Saturday at the 45th ECAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, piling up 28 points to stand fourth overall at the midway point of the team standings. This is the furthest south the ECAC Championships has ever been held, and the weather continued clearing throughout the day to herald strong performances throughout the meet. Delaware has a slim lead in the 31-team event, leading Harvard by two points, 35-33, while Army West Point is third with 30 points. Following the Tribe with 28 points, Stony Brook rounds out the top five teams with 26 points.
Results
Hammer Throw
The day began out at the Dan Stimson Throwing Events Area with the hammer throw, and W&M picked up two All-East performances right off the bat. Grad student
Eva Mustafic (Zagreb, Croatia) threw 51.51m (169-0) to finish in sixth place, with
Keeley Suzenski (Fleetwood, Pa.) finishing right behind her in 50.63m (166-1) for seventh overall. They join all-time great
Leia Mistowski '18 as the only women's throwers in program history to be named All-East in the hammer throw.
Shot Put
Next up for Suzenski was the her signature event, the shot put, and she did not disappoint. The redshirt-sophomore broke her own school record for the second time this spring (and third time this school year) with a put of 14.97m (49-1.5), and took second overall for her second All-East award of the day. It was the best finish ever for a Tribe women's thrower in the ECAC shot put outdoors.
Javelin
The third event of the day out in the throwing fields was the javelin, where redshirt-sophomore
Kristen Herr (Willow Street, Pa.) threw 43.49m (142-8) for fifth overall and her first career All-East honor. Herr's finish was the best for a Tribe javelin thrower since
Wendy Warren '88 took fourth overall at the 1986 ECAC Championships.
Long Jump
Inside of Zable Stadium, the action including the long jump, where
Megan Heidebrecht (Amissville, Va.) cleared 5.75m (18-10.5) for fourth place overall and All-East honors. She is the first jumper in program history to be named All-East in the long jump outdoors, and recorded the eighth-best single performance in school history to earn that distinction.
3,000m Run
W&M's day wrapped up with the 3,000m championship, where two harriers earned All-East honors. Sophomore
Kyra Holland (Warrenton, Va.) ran 9:56.97 in her first collegiate 3,000m to take fifth overall, and freshman
Arianna DeBoer (Charlottesville, Va.) added a pair of team points with her seventh-place finish in 10:08.47.
The ECAC Championships wrap up on Sunday at Zable Stadium and the Stimson Throwing Events Area, with action in the 100m, 200m, and 400m dash, as well as the 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 4x400m relay, 4x800m relay, discus throw, high jump, pole vault, and triple jump. The day is scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM with the discus throw, and at 11:30 AM on the track with the 100m hurdles.
