WILLIAMSBURG, VA.- After a season-long 10 day layoff, William & Mary baseball is finally back on the diamond this Wednesday for a meeting with Old Dominion in Norfolk. The Tribe did not play last weekend as Notre Dame canceled the scheduled series with the Green and Gold.
William & Mary will look to avenge a 5-1 loss at the hands of the Monarchs earlier this season. In the game,
Jack Cone doubled, and
Mike Weidinger,
Tom Mayer, and
Nate Knowles combined to allow just three hits and one run, while striking out six in five relief innings.
The Tribe put up a 10 spot in a win last time out against Hofstra. On the season, William & Mary is 11-1 when scoring 10 or more and 17-3 when plating at least six runs in a ball game.
The Green and Gold have been able to get to opposing pitchers early, scoring in the first inning 16 times this season. Overall, the Tribe is 11-5 when scoring in the first frame and 10-5 when scoring first in the ballgame.
Despite playing fewer games than any other team in the league, the Tribe has a few players among the CAA leaders in offensive categories.
Ben Williamson ranks eighth in the league with 35 runs scored and 10th in batting average.
Cole Ragone,
Joe Delossantos, and
Matt Thomas all are tied for ninth in the CAA with seven homers on the season. Cone ranks second among all players in the league with five sacrifice flies.
Delossantos is the reigning CAA player of the week after a huge four games the last time out for the Tribe. The junior outfielder knocked in eight runs over the four game stretch and also scored seven times. Delossantos hit a pair of homers and a pair of doubles and now is tied for the team lead in home runs and steals and is second on the club in slugging and RBI.
The Tribe has a pair of players with impressive standings nationally. Second baseman
David Hogarth is still the toughest man in the NCAA to strikeout, going down just four times in 139 at bats, while rookie pitcher
Carter Lovasz ranks 10th in the NCAA with a 0.84 WHIP.
