WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary men's golf heads to South Carolina to take part in the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association Championship, April 24-26.

The Championships
The CAA Championships will be decided over 54 holes at the Dataw Island Club this year, on the club's Cotton Dike Course. The course is par-72 and will play 6,787 yards. The CAA Championships will have three rounds of action, one each day beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday and 8 a.m. on Monday. The winning team as well as the winning individual (if not on the championship squad) will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
Scouting the Field
In addition to W&M, six other teams will be aiming for the conference title. The College of Charleston, winners of four-straight between 2014-17 and the defending champions, are the top seed overall, with UNCW ranked second and Elon third. JMU players will compete as individuals at the championship. Charleston's Zach Reuland is the returning champion after shooting a 13-under 203 last season.

W&M at the CAA Championships
The Tribe won the CAA title in 1985 by 17 strokes, after finishing second by a single stroke at the inaugural event in 1984. Since then, W&M also finished second in 1991, 2010, and 2015. Individually, Hall-of-Famer John McHenry '86 was the low scorer in both 1984 and 1985, and finished second in 1986. In 1985, he tied teammate Mike Gregor '85 for the title. Since that point, the Tribe has had individuals finish second in both 2008 (Brent Paladino '09) and 2013 (Alex Hicks '15). W&M advanced to NCAA Regional competition in 1991, 1994, and most recently in 2002, when current head coach
Tim Pemberton '05 was a sophomore and finished top-five at the CAA Championships along with his classmate Gary Barton '05.
Last Year CAA Recap
W&M finished fourth at the 2021 CAA Championship at the Dataw Island Club, behind a 14-over 878. The Tribe's stroke total was its lowest since 2008 (877), while the Green and Gold posted its lowest score to par since 2002 (-5). Charleston won the title behind an 834 (-30).
Preston Ball led W&M behind a 2-over 218 to share 13th, while
Jimmy Taylor was 15th at 3-over 219.
Last Time Out
- On Tuesday, the Tribe placed seventh in the 15-team field Wildcat Spring Invitational. W&M fired an opening round 292, before shooting 298 in the final 18 to total a 590. The Tribe finished ahead of fellow CAA team Delaware, who was ninth.

Matthew Feinstein led the Tribe, earning his third top-10 of the year thanks to a 5-over 145 to finish in a share of eighth.
- Freshman
Logan Hunter finished in 17th at 146, while sophomore
Will Rieck was 28th at 149.
News and Notes
- Entering the championship, Mangum leads the Tribe with a stroke average of 74.68 followed closely by Hunter at 74.76 and Feinstein at 74.93.
- Hunter's stroke average ranks seventh in Tribe history for a freshman. He owns six rounds of par or lower this season.
- Mangum also leads the Tribe with a pair of top-10s and seven rebounds of par or lower. He earned a runner-up effort earlier this season at the Howard Bison Invitational.
- Both Binau and Feinstein rank in the Tribe's top 20 for career stroke average. Binau is 15th at 75.62, while Feinstein is 18th at 75.24.
- As a team, the Tribe's 297.24 stroke average per round ranks eighth in W&M history.
- In March, Mangum was W&M institutional honoree for the Colonial Athletic Association's male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. Mangum is pursuing his graduate degree in public policy at W&M.
- Mangum was named the inaugural Pathway Player at the Genesis Invitational, earning a spot in the Collegiate Showcase. Competing in the loaded field on Feb. 14, the Tribe graduate student sat atop of the leaderboard after three-straight birdies to open the round. He eventually finished in 11th with a 75.
- Mangum was ranked No. 1 in the first update of the APGA Collegiate Ranking, which is a partnership between PGA TOUR University presented by Velocity Global and the APGA Tour, for the 2021-22 season following the fall season. The APGA Collegiate Ranking. Eligible players are Black golfers from NCAA Division I, II or III programs – including HBCUs. The APGA Collegiate Ranking is based on players' Golfstat adjusted scoring average, designed to evaluate the top players positioned to qualify for APGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying Tournament access.
- During the fall, the Tribe fired a school-record 14-under 850 over the 54-hole VCU Shootout, Sept. 13-14, finishing in a share of third place. On day one, W&M shot the second-best 36-hole total of 10-under 566, which included the second-best 18-hole score of 10-under 278 in round two. The Tribe's third-round score of four-under 284 was the 12th-best 18-hole score in program history.
