BOSTON, MASS. - Clutch hits and a pair of stellar performances on the mound boosted the Tribe to a 6-2 win over Northeastern Friday afternoon in Boston.
Jack Cone,
David Hogarth, and
Matt Thomas all had big hits while Zack Tsakounis earned the win and
Carter Lovasz picked up the save.
Cone's two-out single in the first got the Tribe on the board, and Hogarth's three-run homer in the third gave William & Mary a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the game. Thomas ripped a two-RBI double in the fourth to cap off the six run day for the Green and Gold.
Cole Ragone extended his hitting streak to a season-long seven games, and
Ben Williamson had two hits in his return to the lineup.
Tsakounis scattered just two hits over 5.1 innings allowing just one run to win his third ballgame of the season. The outing was the senior's longest of the season thus far and he struck out three Northeastern hitters. Lovasz allowed just one unearned run on one hit in the final 3.2 frames to close the door for the Tribe.
William & Mary wasted no time getting on the board as two-out singles from Ragone, Williamson, and Cone would plate a runner in the first. Northeastern immediately answered with a run of their own in the opening frame.
After a scoreless second,
Matt Thomas singled to lead off the third and moved ahead on Williamson's double. Hogarth struck a 3-2 fastball over the wall in left to give the Tribe the 4-1 edge.
The Tribe added on in the fourth as
Joe Delossantos and
Tyler Solomon would lead off the frame with back to back walks. Thomas crushed a 0-1 pitch into right field plating both runners making it a 6-1 game.
From there it would be a masterclass from the Tribe arms as Northeastern would muster just an unearned run in the eighth inning ensuring the Green and Gold's 6-2 win. The victory lifted William & Mary to 3-1 in the young conference season.
