WILLIAMSBURG, VA. - Fresh off a three-game sweep of George Mason, William & Mary baseball will head to Duke looking to extend their winning streak to four games. The Tribe and the Blue Devils will get together for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Coach McRae's club outscored Mason 20-9 in the three victories over the weekend, while Duke was 1-2 against rival North Carolina.
Solid pitching was the key to William & Mary's success over the weekend as freshmen
Carter Lovasz and
Mike Weidinger combined to work 6.0 scoreless relief innings on Friday as Weidinger picked up his first collegiate win, and Lovasz his first save. The duo combined to allow just one hit and one walk over the six innings pitched.
Casey Green tossed 7.0 scoreless frames allowing just two hits on Saturday and
Tom Mayer struck out three allowing zero runs in 3.0 relief innings Sunday.
Fast starts and strong finishes have boosted the Tribe this season. William & Mary has scored in the first inning seven times this season, and the team is 5-2 in those ballgames. In addition, the Tribe has bested teams by a score of 45-17 in the final three innings, and has outscored the opposition 15-5 in the seventh, 22-6 in the eighth, and 8-6 in the ninth.
Ben Williamson and
Cole Ragone both broke out for four hits and a pair of runs on Sunday afternoon. Williamson ranks 10th in the league with 22 hits and Ragone moved into eighth in the CAA with a .351 batting average.
The Tribe has been disciplined at the plate this season as Trotta (13), Thomas (12), and Cone (11) all rank in the top-10 in the league in walks. Thomas has made the most of his time on the bases scoring 17 runs, fifth most in the league, while
Ben Williamson ranks second with 20.
