WILLIAMSBURG, VA.- After five straight games on the road, William & Mary baseball will return to Plumeri Park Friday afternoon for the first of three games this weekend with George Mason. The Saturday and Sunday games will be played in Alexandria.
The Tribe and Patriots have split the past 28 games between the two programs. The Green and Gold have taken nine of 17 games in Williamsburg, and currently hold a five-game winning streak over George Mason. Last season, the Tribe bested Mason 4-1
Jack Cone had three hits in the ballgame, and
Tyler Solomon and
Matt Thomas both homered in the win.
Cone and Thomas enter the series on a roll with each reaching base in the last eight games. Both outfielders went deep in Tuesday's doubleheader at Davidson and Thomas has homered twice in the last three games bringing his season total to a CAA-leading five. Cone has hit in his last three games and ranks ninth in the league with 19 RBIs.
Cone has also been one of the hardest hitters to strike out in the league this season. Cone has struck out five times and drawn 14 free passes, while
David Hogarth has been punched out just twice in 53 at bats.
Ben Williamson has also been contact-driven, striking out three times in 57 at bats.
Coming home will be a welcome feeling for the Tribe as the team is 5-2 at Plumeri Park this season. The team has won over 65% of ball games in Williamsburg over the past 20 years. The Green and Gold have scored in the first inning in seven of twelve games this year, and are outscoring opponents 18-12 in the first. William & Mary has bested teams by a score of 35-14 in the final three frames.
Of the Tribe's top-three pitchers in terms of innings pitched, all three have an ERA of 3.00 or lower.
Carter Lovasz and
Zach Tsakounis lead the Tribe with 15.0 innings tossed on the season and both have a 3.00 ERA. Lovasz has struck out 13 while only walking three, and Tsakounis is holding opponents to a .236 batting average.
Casey Green has tossed 11.1 innings and allowed just two earned runs, with 10 strikeouts.
A pair of Tribe lefties have led the team in appearances this season as
Matt Howat and
Adam Fischer have each pitched in six games. In his last four outings, Fischer has tossed 6.2 innings and struck out 12 men allowing zero runs.
Another Tribe lefty,
Zach Tsakounis has been tremendous, allowing just one run in 10.0 innings over his last three outings. Tsakounis has struck out seven and allowed just seven hits with a 1.00 WHIP over that time.
Rojo Prarie struck out five men in two innings of work Tuesday and leads the team with 18 Ks on the year. Prairie, Fischer, and
Mike Weidinger all are striking out over 10 men per nine innings pitched.
