WILLIAMSBURG, VA. - William & Mary baseball is on the road for a five-game road trip beginning Friday night as the Tribe will play Georgia Southern for the first of three games in Statesboro.
Mike McRae's team will then head to Davidson for a pair of midweek games with the Wildcats.
The weekend series marks the first three-game set on the road for the Tribe this season, and the five-game road trip is the team's longest of the year. The weekend games will also mark the first trip in program history to Georgia Southern.
The Tribe is 5-4 on the season following a tough 10-inning loss to Georgetown on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles enter the weekend 7-6 following a midweek split with #20 UGA. Six of Georgia Southern's 13 games this season have come against top-25 competition.
Fast starts and strong finishes have boosted the Tribe this season. The Green and Gold have scored in the first inning in six of nine games this year, and are outscoring opponents 17-6 in the first. Through the first three innings, the Tribe has outscored teams 31-8, and have bested teams by a score of 28-11 in the final three frames.
A foursome of Tribe lefties have been strong on the hill in the early going.
Zach Tsakounis leads the team in innings pitched and has held opponents to a .227 batting average.
Mike Weidinger has struck out 11 over 6.2 innings pitched, striking out five over 3.0 innings last Sunday.
Matt Howat has led the Tribe in appearances over the past two seasons and owns two saves this season. He has allowed just one earned run in four chances this year.
Adam Fischer struck out four over 2.1 innings pitched on Tuesday.
Joe Delossantos has been a spark for the William & Mary offense over the past four games. The junior has a four-game hitting streak and is 8-14 with a walk, with four runs driven in over those four games. Delossantos has reached base in all seven games he has started, scoring a run in five of those games (three straight).
The right-handed trio of
Casey Green,
Jack Cone, and
Carter Lovasz has been dominant on the hill this season for McRae. Lovasz is tied for the team lead tossing 12.0 innings and is allowing just a .163 batting average against. He has struck out 11 men while allowing zero walks.
Jack Cone has won both of his starts this season and has allowed just one run, striking out six. Green has allowed just one earned run in his two starts and struck out eight men to just one walk.
