WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's golf team was once again honored for its work in the classroom as the program was one of 42 Division I programs to earn Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) President's Special Recognition Team Academic Award.
The Tribe was one of four schools in the CAA to be honored with the award President's Special Recognition, which awards teams with a 3.5 season GPA, or better. The Green and Gold posted a 3.54 cumulative GPA. It marks the third time in the last five years and second straight that W&M received the President's Special Recognition for its academic prowess. A total of 210 schools, including 122 DI programs, submitted GPAs of 3.0 or better with 72 of those school across all divisions earning the Presidents Special Recognition.
Last season, the Tribe averaged a school-record 293.8 strokes per round, more than half a stroke better than the previous mark set in 2013-14. W&M was also 30-23 (.556) in head-to-head competition and finished fourth at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship. Individually,
Preston Ball (73.47) and
Matthew Feinstein (73.60) turned in the 10th and 12th-best season scoring averages in program history. Over the summer,
Jimmy Taylor won the Virginia State Golf Association's State Amateur Championship, becoming the first Tribe player to do so.
Established in 1958, GCAA is the professional organization of golf coaches. The GCAA's mission is to support its member coaches by creating educational opportunities, providing resources, and promoting its members with the purpose of enhancing their overall performance as coaches, mentors, and teachers. The GCAA also recognizes the excellence and achievements of its members and their student-athletes in academic, athletic and civic endeavors.
