Charleston Sinks Tribe Behind Big Ninth Inning

Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, VA. – The Tribe led most of the way but an eight run ninth inning propelled Charleston to a 9-4 win Friday afternoon at Plumeri Park. William & Mary scored the first four runs of the game and took a 4-1 lead into the ninth but the Cougars sent 12 men to the plate and scored eight times to put the game away in the final frame.

Wade Strain dazzled in his final career home start allowing just one run in 7.1 innings and WM got homers from Cole Ragone and Tyler Solomon, but the final three outs eluded the Green and Gold in the top of the ninth.

The Cougars threatened first getting a pair of two-out singles in the top of the first, but Strain would shut the door forcing a weak fly ball to right field to end the inning. Strain and Charleston starter William Privette would trade scoreless frames through the first two innings of play.

The Tribe opened up the scoring in the bottom of the third taking advantage of Charleston mistakes. David Hogarth reached on an error to lead off the frame and moved to second on a bunt single from Joe Delossantos. Both players advanced ninety feet on a balk from Cougar starter Privette and Hogarth scored on an RBI groundout by Matt McDermott.

Cole Ragone would double the Tribe's lead in the bottom of the fourth, lifting his first homer of the season over the wall in center. The designated hitter smoked the first pitch he saw over the 400 sign in dead center to make it 2-0 William & Mary.

In the fifth, Charleston's Jared Kirven led off with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball but once again Strain was able to neutralize the threat keeping the Cougars off the scoreboard.

Tyler Solomon added a pair of runs to the Tribe's lead with one swing of the bat in the home half of the sixth. Mark Trotta led off the inning with a single deep in the hole at short and would come around as Solomon blasted a first-pitch bomb into the parking lot in right field making it 4-0 William & Mary.

With one out in the eighth, Charleston would finally break through against Strain. Trotter Harlan lifted a fastball just inside the foul pole in left field for his third homer of the season making it a 4-1 game.

The Cougars would explode in the ninth plating eight runs on six hits taking advantage of a Tribe error and four free passes to take the 9-4 lead. Jack Cone picked up the loss, his first of the season and reliever Ryan Smith earned his second win of the year tossing 2.2 innings of one-hit ball out of the pen for Charleston.

The same two teams will play two tomorrow with game one of the doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. Senior day festivities will take place a half hour before first pitch.
