WILLIAMSBURG, VA. – Fresh off a four-game road trip the William & Mary baseball team will return to Plumeri Park for an all-important three-game set with CAA South co-leader College of Charleston (8-7). The Tribe will take on the Cougars Friday afternoon and finish the home portion of the 2021 schedule with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon. Both days are scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
The Tribe sits in third place in the South with a 9-9 mark just 0.5 games behind Charleston and Elon. All five teams in the division are separated by just one game with two weeks left to play.
The home turf will be a welcome sight for coach Murphy's team. The Green and Gold hold an 8-7 home record this season, but more importantly, the Tribe is 7-2 against CAA foes at Plumeri Park this season having won series over UNCW, Elon, and James Madison.
William & Mary put together a 1-3 record on the recent road trip winning the opening game against UNCW before dropping the final two and falling Tuesday night at Duke. Charleston is also coming off a CAA series loss as the Cougars fell in two of three games at Elon last weekend.
This weekend will mark the second three-game series between the two teams this season. The Trieb took game one down in Charleston in mid March before the Cougars rallied to win the series two games to one. Coach Murphy's team holds a 6-4 advantage over Charleston all time and most recently swept the Cougars at Plumeri Park in 2019.
Senior
Wade Strain earned his 16th career win last weekend at UNCW. Strain will toe the rubber for the final time at Plumeri Park this weekend. The righty comes into the weekend ranking in the top-20 in WM history in games started, innings pitched, wins, and strikeouts. His five wins this season are tied for second in the league.
Justin Pearson and
Zach Tsakounis have also provided the Tribe with strong pitching over the past couple of weekend series. Pearson has won two of his last three starts and Tsakounis has allowed just one run over his last two outings. Strain and Pearson combined to allow just two runs in the Tribe's March win over Charleston.
Matt McDermott smoked a pair of hits against Duke tuesday evening including his 11th double of the season. With 11 two-baggers, McDermott ranks second in the CAA and the shortstop has started 159 straight games entering weekend play.
The Tribe baseball team will honor seven seniors,
David Hogarth, Pearson, McDermott,
Jacob Haney,
Will Moore,
Randy Prosperi, and
Tyler Solomon along with graduate students, Strain, Matt Trehub, and
Michael Zubovich before Saturday's doubleheader.
