The William & Mary men's track & field team put forth four great efforts on Wednesday at the NCAA Eastern Semifinals in Jacksonville, Fla., wrapping up the season on a strong note. The Tribe's four competitors improved on average two positions over their pre-meet seeding.
- First up was the javelin, where redshirt-freshman
Jared O'Riley (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) and true freshman
Chris Arias (Red Bank, N.J.) were both competing in their first NCAA meet. O'Riley, the Colonial Athletic Association Champion, improved three spots over his pre-meet seeding to take 32nd overall with a throw of 63.27m (207-7). Arias improved a massive 11 spots from his ranking coming in, and finished 37th overall at 61.86m (202-11).
- In the hammer throw, redshirt-junior
KJ Cook (Buena Vista, Va.) threw his first attempt 63.88m (209-7), the 14th-longest throw in school history. That stood him third at the completion of two of the three flights, but the third flight pushed him out of qualifying position and down to 17th overall, four places better than he was predicted to finish. Cook's performance was also the longest hammer throw in NCAA competition ever for W&M.
- Finishing out the afternoon was the pole vault, where redshirt-junior
Michael Fairbanks (Fairfax Station, Va.) was right in the thick of an exciting chase for the 12th and final qualifying spot. Fairbanks recorded a third-attempt clearance at 5.00m (16-4.75) and second attempt at 5.15m (16-10.75), before pulling out a clutch third-attempt clearance at 5.25m (17-2.75). With 15 men over 5.25m, the competition advanced to 5.35m (17-6.5), but despite three good looks, Fairbanks was unable to sneak over, and finished 15th overall on the basis of attempts. His bar at 5.25m was still the fourth-highest mark ever at W&M outdoors, and the best height ever for a Tribe athlete in an NCAA outdoor championships.
W&M wraps up a season that included a runner-up finish at the CAA Championships, and the 18th-straight year of athletes competing at the NCAA Championships. The Tribe broke three school records during the outdoor campaign, and won five events at the Colonial Relays (including the 200m for the first time ever and the 4x400m for the first time since 1963) in addition to eight individual titles at the CAA Championships (including the 200m and the 400m for the first time ever).
