WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary baseball will continue their six-game road trip this weekend with a trio of games at Elon. The Tribe returns to CAA play after a pair of weekend series with VCU and Richmond and will look to improve on their 3-3 conference record.
William & Mary is coming off a twelve-inning 7-6 midweek loss at UVA Tuesday afternoon. Prior to the midweek contest, the Tribe took two out of three from Richmond last weekend.
Elon enters the weekend fresh off an 8-7 win on Tuesday evening over High Point, last weekend the Phoenix dropped two of three at UNCW in their first CAA action of the 2021 season.
The Tribe has been the beneficiary of solid starting pitching this season led by graduate student
Wade Strain. Last time out, Strain earned his CAA-leading third win allowing just two runs over 6.1 innings against Richmond. Junior
Zach Tsakounis gave up three runs over seven innings last Sunday in a no decision and his .254 BAA is ninth in the CAA.
Ben Greenspon has allowed just four hits and three extra-base hits over 20.2 innings of work.
Offensively,
Matt McDermott enters the weekend red hot having hit safely in his last seven games, the shortstop's second seven-game hitting streak this season. Over the past four ball games, McDermott has collected seven knocks, five RBIs, and five runs scored.
McDermott is not the only player for the Tribe entering the weekend with a hitting streak on the line as
Ben Williamson leads the team having hit safely in 15 straight outings. Williamson is fourth in the league with a .382 average and leads the Tribe with 12 runs scored.
Jack Cone has been solid all season for the Tribe hitting .338 on the season with a team-leading 12 RBIs. Cone leads the Green and Gold and is eighth in the league with six stolen bases and has drawn nine walks to just seven strikeouts through 20 games. Cone, McDermott, and Williamson all have 30-plus total bases on the season.
Elon has a prolific offense and comes into the weekend with the Tribe ranked second in the CAA with 18 home runs. Alex Iadisernia leads the way for the Phoenix with nine homers and is hitting .390 with 15 RBIs through 21 games. Spencer Bauer has been solid for Elon on the hill with a 2.84 ERA in six starts this season.
