WILLIAMSBURG, VA. – The Tribe will head to Wilmington this weekend for three games of CAA action with the Seahawks. Coach Murphy's squad will look to win a third straight conference series after sweeping Elon two weeks ago and taking two of three from James Madison last weekend.
The Green and Gold enter Friday's matchup second in the CAA Southern Division with an 8-7 league record, 1.5 games behind first place College of Charleston. Wilmington is 5-7 in conference games this season but the Seahawks are coming off a 2-1 series win over Elon last weekend.
The matchup marks the second series between the two rivals this season as the Tribe took two of three tight games from UNCW at Plumeri Park in late March. William & Mary won both legs of a doubleheader 5-4 and 7-6 before surrendering a 4-1 series finale to the Seahawks.
Justin Pearson and
Zach Tsakounis were the winning pitchers for the Tribe in the late March victories over UNCW and both lefties are coming off terrific outings against JMU. Pearson threw 6.0 innings of four hit ball allowing just one run to notch his third win of the season in game one of a doubleheader last Sunday. In the second leg of the twin billing, Tsakounis tossed 7.0 scoreless and struck out five men leading the Tribe to a 1-0 victory and earning the junior the CAA Pitcher of the Week honor.
Back in March, Pearson tossed 2.0 clean innings in game one against the Seahawks surrendering just one hit and striking out one as the Tribe came back to win the ball game in the bottom of the ninth on a
Jack Cone walk off. In game two, Tsakounis allowed three runs over 7.0 innings, struck out five, and left the game with a 7-3 lead as the Tribe held on to win 7-6.
Ben Williamson and
Matt McDermott continued to be effective at the top of the order this past weekend for the Tribe going 4-10 and 4-11 respectively against James Madison. Williamson scored a pair of runs and McDermott knocked in four in the three game stretch.
