The William & Mary men's golf team made a huge improvement Monday in the second round of the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, cutting 10 strokes overnight to move into third overall at 580 (+4). Charleston continues to lead at 557 (-19), with Drexel in second at 574 (-2). Individually, Charleston's Zach Reuland leads at 136 (-8), three strokes clear of the field.
"I thought we played very well today," said head coach
Tim Pemberton '05. "Shooting 3-under as a team was a step in the right direction. We'll need to improve again tomorrow and capitalize on our opportunities when they are available. We're within striking distance of catching Charleston and earning a bid to NCAA's. We'll need a solid round from everyone tomorrow to catch the leaders."
"We're excited to be in this position, and we'll give it our best shot."
W&M's team round of 285 (-3) is the best of the season so far, and tied for 16th-lowest all time, while the 36-hole score of 580 (+4) is tied for the 18th-best ever. Individually, grad student
Preston Ball (Raleigh, N.C.) is four strokes off the lead and tied for fourth overall at 140 (-4), the 13th-best 36-hole score ever at W&M. Sophomore
Jimmy Taylor (Alexandria, Va.) had a massive round of 68 (-4), tying his season and career-best and shooting up the leaderboard to a tie for 13th overall at 145 (+1). Junior
Matthew Feinstein (McLean, Va.) shot an even-par 72 to hold steady in a tie for 19th overall with a score of 148 (+4), while freshman
Will Rieck (Brentwood, Tenn.) and sophomore
Trevor Binau (Columbus, Ohio) are each tied for 26th at 155 (+11) overall. Binau reach that point with a seven-stroke improvement overnight, shooting 74 (+2) Monday.
The CAA Championships wrap up Tuesday with one round starting at 8:00 a.m. The Tribe will tee off in the final wave of groups alongside Drexel and Charleston, beginning at 9 a.m.
