Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, VA. – William & Mary dropped game one of a three game series, 9-5 to James Madison Saturday at Plumeri Park. The game was supposed to be game one of a doubleheader, but rain has delayed game two until tomorrow afternoon. The Tribe and Dukes will play a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Matt McDermott led the Tribe offensively going 2-5 and knocking in four runs. The infielder doubled and hit his third homer of the season in the losing effort.
Garrett Casey and
Randy Prosperi combined to toss 1.2 innings of no hit ball out of the bullpen for W&M.
The Dukes wasted no time getting on the board as Conor Hartigan laced a single up the middle with a pair of outs and would later score on an error to make it a 1-0 ball game in the first. The visitors threatened again in the second with a pair of two-out singles but
Matt Thomas would gun down Mason Dunaway at the plate to end the frame.
The Dukes added on in the top half of the third when DeLauter led off the frame with a double to right center and scored on Hartigan's second single of the game. Hartigan came around on Kyle Novak's two-run shot over the wall in right to make it 4-0 JMU.
The Tribe answered with a two-spot in the bottom half of the third inning.
David Hogarth reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a two-out walk by
Ben Williamson. Both Hogarth and Williamson would score on
Matt McDermott's double down the left field line, cutting the Dukes' lead in half.
In the fourth, Dabney created his own run by leading off with a walk and stealing second. He would get to third on a sac bunt and score stealing home pushing the Dukes' lead to 5-2.
James Madison would break the game open in the seventh inning. After a pair of scoreless frames from
Michael Zubovich, the Dukes got to the Tribe's bullpen for four runs on five hits to extend the lead to 9-2.
McDermott would strike again for the Tribe in the bottom of the seventh to dent the James Madison lead. The infielder smashed a two-run two-out homer over the left field wall for his third and fourth RBIs of the day. Later in the inning Thomas' single to center would plate
Mark Trotta making it a 9-5 game.
Neither team would score in the eighth or ninth innings as JMU cruised to the 9-5 decision. William & Mary will look to bounce back and take the series tomorrow afternoon.
