WILLIAMSBURG, VA. – Fresh off last weekend's home sweep over Elon, Tribe baseball will be back in action this weekend for three games at Plumeri Park with James Madison. The Green and Gold are 5-1 this series in home conference games and will look to win their third straight home series hosting the Dukes for a Saturday doubleheader and Sunday matinee.
With last weekend's three-game sweep, the Tribe improved to 6-6 in CAA play on the season and moved into second place in the CAA Southern Division. JMU is third in the division with a 3-3 league mark after a 1-2 weekend in Charleston. The top two teams from each division automatically qualify for the conference tournament.
The Tribe benefited from an offensive explosion in the wins over Elon busting out for 27 runs in three games.
Matt Thomas led the way with seven hits, four runs driven in, and five runs scored as
Ben Williamson followed with six hits, knocking in four, and scoring five times.
Matt McDermott matched Williamson with six hits of his own and four runs scored, while
Mark Trotta used a pair of multi-rbi games to finish the weekend with six runs knocked off four hits.
Williamson has been a catalyst for the Tribe offensively ranking ninth in the league with a .336 batting average. The third baseman is fourth in the league with 36 hits and is averaging 1.40 hits per game. Williamson knocked his first homer of the season last weekend in the sweep, Thomas,
Jack Cone, and
Tyler Solomon also played long ball for the Tribe.
Starter
Wade Strain etched his name deeper into the W&M history books last weekend picking up his CAA-leading fourth win of the season. Strain ranks 16th among all Tribe pitchers with 15 career wins. The righty passed the 200 inning mark in the outing making him just the 23rd pitcher to toss 200-plus innings in the Green and Gold.
The Dukes enter the weekend averaging just over six runs per game and the team has five players hitting over .300 on the season. The James Madison pitching staff has a team ERA of 6.21 and features Justin Showalter who has allowed just one run in two starts this year and is coming off a win in which he threw 8.2 innings against Charleston last weekend.
JMU has only played 15 ball games this season as the team has had 10 games either canceled or postponed. All six of the Dukes' games against Elon were officially canceled while a weekend series with UNCW was postponed to a later date.
