Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, VA. – William & Mary completed the sweep defeating Elon 9-7 in a wild affair Sunday afternoon at Plumeri Park.
Jacob Haney earned his first win of the season tossing 3.0 innings of one run ball and
Randy Prosperi recorded the five out save.
Matt McDermott had three knocks and
Matt Thomas,
Mark Trotta, and
Joe Delossantos each drove in a pair as the Tribe improved to 6-6 in CAA play.
For the second straight ball game the Tribe would jump on the opposing pitcher as the home side scored three runs on five singles in the opening inning.
After a scoreless first from Zubovich the Tribe would take advantage of their first at bats as
Matt McDermott drove a two strike pitch up the middle for a single. He would steal second and score on
Mark Trotta's single into left center. After singles from
Matt Thomas and
Nate Goranson,
Joe Delossantos shot a 3-2 pitch into center plating two and giving the Tribe a three-run first frame.
Elon answered in the top half of the second as Nick Cicci drew a one out walk and moved to second on a single through the right side from Parker Haskin. Both runners scored on Garrett Stonehouse's double down the left field line. The Phoenix tied the ball game on Justin Cassella's single over the outstretched glove of Tribe second baseman
Nic Britt and took the lead on an RBI double from Adam Spurlin.
The Tribe struck back with a four spot of their own in the home second taking advantage of
Tyler Solomon's lead off walk. Solomon moved to second on a single from
Nic Britt and scored on a single from
Ben Williamson. McDermott's second single of the game loaded the bases for the Tribe with no outs. A four-pitch walk to Trotta gave the Tribe the lead and two more would score as Thomas ripped a double off the wall in dead center.
William & Mary went down scoreless in the third and Elon would use doubles from Stonehouse and Cassella to make it a 7-5 ball game in the fourth. Three free passes from the Tribe pitching staff would give Elon another run before
Rojo Prarie struck out Cicci to end the inning and preserve a 7-6 W&M lead.
Jacob Haney entered for the Tribe in the fifth and worked a scoreless frame and Solomon lifted a no-doubter over the wall in the bottom half of the frame to extend the lead back to two.
The Phoenix plated a run in the sixth behind a lead off single from Spurlin and a double from Reynolds. Elon would load the bases but Haney would get a big strikeout to preserve an 8-7 W&M lead.
The teams traded scoreless frames in the seventh before Elon would get a pair of one-out singles in the top of the eighth.
Randy Prosperi would enter and immediately induce two fly balls to shallow right field to end the inning. The Tribe tacked on to the lead in the bottom of the frame as Williamson reached on an error and McDermott legged out an infield single. The duo would double steal and Williamson scored on a wild pitch.
There would be no drama in the ninth as Prosperi retired each of the three men he faced to give the Tribe the 9-7 win and complete the sweep over Elon.
McDermott had three hits and scored twice in each of the last two games and Trotta knocked in seven runs in the three-game series.
The Tribe will look to pick up another CAA series win next weekend as the Green and Gold welcomes James Madison to Plumeri Park for a three-game set. The Tribe and Dukes will play a doubleheader Saturday afternoon and finish the series with a Sunday matinee.
