William & Mary | VCU |
WILLIAMSBURG, VA. – William & Mary baseball will welcome VCU for a midweek affair Tuesday night at Plumeri Park. The in-state rivals were originally scheduled to play Wednesday but the game was moved up due to rain in the forecast.
Both teams will be looking to get back in the win column after tough weekends. The Tribe fell in each of three games at Elon last weekend while VCU would win the first game at George Washington but drop the series final three meetings. The Green and Gold will be looking for revenge as the Rams bested the Tribe in three games last month.
Matt McDermott has been on fire for the Tribe and enters the week on a 10-game hitting streak. The senior infielder swatted his second homer of the season last Tuesday at Virginia and knocked in seven runs over four games last week. McDermott leads the Tribe with 11 extra-base hits and 42 total bases on the year.
Coach Murphy will look for the continued consistency out of the bullpen which was on display this past week. Both
Matt Howat and
Justin Pearson delivered a pair of strong outings for the Tribe in the four games last week and have become staples out of the pen. Howat leads all W&M pitchers with 11 appearances on the season while Pearson has pitched in 10 of the Tribe's 23 games.
The Tribe's bullpen will have their hands full taking on a potent VCU offense. The A-10 power is averaging over seven runs per game led by Tyler Locklear. The freshman ranks third in the NCAA with 13 homers on the season and leads the Rams in batting average, hits, RBI, and total bases. Locklear homered three times in three meetings with the Tribe earlier this season. VCU scored 13 in a midweek game with Georgetown last week.
William & Mary has seen glimpses of power as well as
Matt Thomas has homered three times in his last six games. Thomas leads the Tribe with four homers on the year and is second on the team with nine extra-base hits. McDermott,
David Hogarth, and Matt Trehub also added homers for the Tribe last week.
