William & Mary redshirt-sophomore
Claire Bailey (Fairfax, Va.) wrapped up her first collegiate heptathlon on Saturday at Duke, and recorded the top score in the Colonial Athletic Association this spring by more than 100 points. The hepathlon began Friday, but was only able to fully complete two of the four scheduled events due to storms, leaving five events to be finished today.
Bailey finished 11th overall in the competition, scoring 4,387 points, 42 more than she projected to score coming into the weekend. In addition to ranking her first in the CAA this spring, Bailey also now ranks 10th all-time among Tribe athletes in the heptathlon.
The day started off with the final attempt of the shot put for Bailey, but she was unable to improve on her 11.35m (37-3) effort from Friday night, and finished fifth overall. Next was the 200m dash, where Bailey ran a lifetime-best 27.47, the first of three personal-best efforts in the final four events. She was also 11th in the long jump at 4.82 (15-9.75), then finished third overall in the javelin at 34.82m (112-11), an improvement of more than 2.7 meters over her previous best. Bailey wrapped up her weekend with another lifetime-best, running 2:32.26 in the 800m for 10th overall.
With the second half of the decathlon also cancelled on Friday night, redshirt-freshman
Daniel Layton (Waynesburg, Pa.) competed in the 110m hurdles, finishing third overall in a relatively sedate 15.68 seconds.
The rest of the William & Mary squads will competed Sunday at the GMU Spring Invitational, in Fairfax, Va.
