Box Score ELON, N.C. – The Tribe dropped a pair of high scoring games at Elon Saturday afternoon. W&M fell 13-7 in the opener and dropped a 7-6 decision in game two despite a furious comeback following a weather delay.
The Tribe hit nine extra-base hits in the pair of games and saw homers from Matt Trehub,
Matt Thomas, and
David Hogarth. Thomas and
Matt McDermott both knocked in four runs on the day and
Ben Williamson had a hit in both games to extend his hitting streak to 17 games.
It did not take long for Elon to get on the board in the first game of the doubleheader as the first two men would reach on a single and a walk. Alex Iadisernia would send his eighth homer of the season over the right field wall to make it 3-0 Phoenix.
The Tribe would get a run back in the top half of the second as Thomas sent an opposite field jack over the fence in right center to put W&M on the board. After a pair of perfect innings from Strain, Trehub sent a two-run shot over the right field to tie the game 3-3.
The game would not remain tied long as Elon struck back in the bottom of the fourth stringing together a pair of hits and plating a run on a Garrett Stonehouse sac fly. Later in the frame, Justin Cassella launched a three-run shot over the wall in left to give the Phoenix a 7-3 edge.
The Tribe would get one back as Williamson shot a triple into right field and would later score on
Matt McDermott's RBI groundout. Elon added three more in the fifth, making it 10-4 but the Tribe would answer in the top half of the sixth. Thomas would walk and score on
David Hogarth's pinch hit single. Hogarth and
Tyler Solomon would both score as McDermott ripped a double down the left field line.
Elon would hold the Tribe scoreless in the final three frames and add three runs in the seventh to wrap up a 13-7 win. The game marked the second time this season the Tribe homered twice in the same contest.
The second game featured a rain delay and a six-run fourth inning for the Tribe, but W&M could not hold on late as Elon came back to take a 7-6 game.
Elon used the long ball to get out infront early once again in game two. Cassella led off the game launching his second homer of the day over the wall in left to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead one batter into the bottom of the first.
The home team would benefit from three errors by the Tribe in the third to extend the lead. Cassella and Arnone would both reach base on the errors and score as the inning was highlighted by a two-run homer from Anthony Galason. The game was then suspended for nearly an hour due to weather conditions in the area but Elon would tack on another run when play resumed making it 5-0.
Michael Zubovich entered the game following the delay marking the second start of the season for Greenspon shortened by rain.
The Tribe would strike back in a big way to take the lead in the top of the fourth as Williamson led off the inning with a single and came all the way around to score on McDermott's triple to right.
Mark Trotta roped a single into McDermott. Trotta and Trehub would score as Thomas roped a double into the gap and the Tribe would take a 6-5 lead on
David Hogarth's two-run bomb out to left.
Justin Pearson would shut the Elon offense down for three innings, but the Phoenix would get to the Tribe lefty in the bottom of the eighth. Cassella doubled to begin the rally and would be joined on base by Cranston. With two outs, Iadisernia doubled plating the two runners and giving the 7-6 edge back to Elon.
The Tribe would be unable to answer in the ninth as Elon would take game two by a 7-6 score. The Green and Gold will look to bounce back tomorrow in the series finale with the Phoenix. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
