Women's Tennis Sweeps Sunday Home Doubleheader

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis picked up its first two wins of the 2021 season with a Sunday sweep at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The Tribe opened up the day with a 6-1 win over instate foe Norfolk State, before blanking CAA foe Towson, 7-0.
 
Graduate student Jill van den Dungen, senior Vitoria Okuyama, junior Lisa Fukutoka and sophomore Elisa Van Meeteren each posted two singles wins on the day. In doubles, junior Mila Saric and Okuyama won twice at the top spot, while Van Meeteren and fellow sophomore Alisia Manolescu picked up two victories at No. 3.
 
How It Happened vs. Norfolk State
- The Tribe swept the doubles point, dropping just two games between the three positions.
- W&M posted 6-0 wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. Saric and Okuyama blanked Paula Fortuno and Laura Ruiz at the top spot. On line three, the sophomore pair of Van Meeterena and Manolescu won their first match as a team over Andrea Barcenas and Lydia Oviedo.
- van den Dungen and sophomore Raffaela Alhach rounded out the sweep with a 6-2 win over Zoe Fraser and Bruna Goncalves on line two. The Tribe pair improved to 2-1 on the year.
-  At the top four singles positions, the Tribe rolled by dropping just two total games in picking up straight-set wins.
- van den Dungen and Okuyama picked up matching 6-0, 6-0 win at the top two singles posts. van den Dungen upended Paula Fortuno for her first win as a member of the Tribe on line one. Okuyama downed Zoe Fraser for her first win of the year.
- On line three, Fukutoku dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Bruna Goncalves for her first win as a member of the Tribe.
- Van Meeteren also dropped just one game, rolling past Laura Ruiz, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4 for her first win of the year.
- Alhach rounded out the Tribe's victory with a three-set win on line five. The Tribe sophomore won the opening set, 7-5, before Norfolk State's Andrea Barcenas won the second, 6-4. In the third-set super tiebreaker, Alhach outlasted Barcenas, 10-7.
 
How It Happened vs. Towson
- W&M captured the doubles point for the second-straight match on Sunday, winning at all three positions.
- Both the teams of Saric and Okuyama at No. 1 and Van Meeteren and Manolescu at No. 3 won for the second time on the day. The former notched their third-straight triumph downing Themis Haliou and Alexa Martinez, 6-2, while the latter defeated Lea Kosanovic and Jessica Assenmacher, 6-3.
- Teaming together for the first time on line two, van den Dungen and Fukutoku downed Amelia Lawson and Lauryn Jacobs, 6-3.
- Saric made quick work of Haliou at No. 1 for her third-straight win at the top spot. She dropped just two games in rolling past the Tigers' top player, 6-1, 6-1. Saric is 3-0 at No. 1 this season.
- van den Dungen, Okuyama, Fukutoku and Van Meeteren each won their second match of the day at No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6. van den Dungen topped Lawson, 6-3, 6-1, on line two, while Van Meeteren dropped just one game at No. 6 in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jessica Assenmacher. Okuyama need three sets, but upended Martinez, 3-6, 6-1, 10-4, at No. 3, and Fukutoku defeated Jacobs, 7-6, 6-1, at No. 4
- Manolescu rounded out the Tribe sweep with her second win in as many days. She downed Sarah Pospischill, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 5.
