Wade Strain dominated on the mound and
Tyler Solomon knocked in a pair of runs as the Tribe bested George Mason on the road Saturday afternoon. Strain earned the win tossing seven scoreless innings retiring seven straight batters from the second inning through the fourth.
It was the 12th career victory for Strain and sophomore
Matt Howat earned the six-out save, the first of his career.
Matt Thomas swatted his first-career homer and
Jack Cone had three hits and scored a pair of runs in the win.
The Tribe got the scoring going early with a two-spot in the first inning.
Jack Cone singled and moved to second on a
Hunter Hart walk. Cone would come around to score on
Tyler Solomon's RBI single and Hart would score later in the inning on a fielder's choice.
The teams would trade scoreless frames until the top of the sixth when
Matt Thomas connected for a deep home run to left-center to put the Tribe up 3-0. George Mason would cut into the deficit as a Scott Morgan double scored a run in the bottom of the eighth.
The Tribe would get an insurance run in the ninth inning as Cone led the frame off with a single. He would move to third as Hart reached on an error and once again was knocked in by Solomon, this time via a sacrifice fly to give W&M a 4-1 advantage.
Leadoff man
Ben Williamson had a pair of hits in the ball game and Matt Trehub had a hit and walked three times in the contest.
David Hogarth added a triple for the Tribe.
Coach Murphy's club will be back for a home-opening doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at Plumeri Park. The Tribe's pair of tilts with Central Michigan begins at noon.
