Box Score 2 WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary fell 6-3 and 9-4 in a pair of games to VCU Saturday afternoon in Richmond. The Tribe got a home run in game one from
Matt McDermott and a flurry of hits from
Ben Williamson and
Jack Cone in the losses.
The Tribe struck first in game one utilizing a pair of hits and three walks to grab a quick 2-0 lead.
Ben Williamson walked and advanced as
Jack Cone singled to center.
Tyler Solomon followed with a walk of his own and
Matt Thomas roped a single into left to plate Williamson and Cone.
Tsakounis dominated the Rams the first time through the lineup but the home side would get to the sophomore in the bottom of the third. VCU took advantage of a walk and a hit by pitch as Steven Carpenter plated a pair of runs on a single to tie the game at 2-2.
Once again, free passes would haunt the Tribe as VCU used another hit batsman and a walk combined with two hits to go up 5-2 on William & Mary in the bottom of the fifth. The Green and Gold got a run back in the seventh as
Matt McDermott swatted his first homer of the season into left cutting the deficit to 5-3.
Garrett Newsome pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the Tribe but VCU would tack on another run as Tyler Locklear hit a solo homer for the Rams in the bottom of the eighth. The Tribe would go quietly in the ninth as VCU secured a 6-3 game one lead.
Ben Williamson led off game two with a single to center to extend his hitting streak to a team-high 11 ballgames. Williamson singled again in the second and scored on a VCU error to give the Tribe a 1-0 lead. McDermott would come around as Cone singled to left to give the Green and Gold a 2-0 edge.
After a near two hour rain delay, VCU scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 advantage. The Rams added a run in the fifth before McDermott scored on a VCU error. The home team would open up the game with a three-run seventh making it 8-3. Williamson would knock
David Hogarth in to give the Tribe a fourth run in the eighth but it would not be enough as VCU took a 9-4 victory.
The Tribe will be back in action next weekend for a three game set against Richmond.
