Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, VA.- Despite solid relief pitching, William & Mary was unable to overcome an early deficit in an 8-2 loss to Old Dominion Wednesday evening at Plumeri Park. The Tribe falls to 1-6 on the year while the Monarch's are now 9-3 in 2021.
Old Dominion started the scoring early as Andy Garriola hit a home run sneaking just inside the foul pole in left field to give the visitors a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The Monarchs would tack on another run in the opening frame. In the Tribe's half of the first
Ben Williamson led off with a single and reached third on a
Jack Cone double but the two were stranded on the base path.
Will Moore found himself in trouble to begin the second inning loading the bases with no outs but the Tribe reliever was able to strike out the next three batters to keep the Monarchs off the scoreboard in the frame. The three punchouts would begin a run of 12 straight batters retired by the W&M bullpen as
Garrett Newsome tossed 2.2 innings of perfect ball retiring each of the eight men he faced and
Adam Fischer retired the final batter of fifth to keep the score 4-0.
The Tribe would threaten again in the bottom half of the fifth as Matt Trehub singled and would move to third on the second hit of the ballgame from Williamson. The home side had men on second and third after Williamson swiped second, but once again the Tribe could not push home a run.
Momentum shifted back to the Monarchs as home runs from Kyle Battle and Lincoln Ransom extended ODU's lead to 8-0. The Green and Gold would plate a pair of runs in the ninth as
Mark Trotta and
Nic Britt walked before a
Hunter Hart single loaded the bases.
David Hogarth walked forcing in a run and
Phil Conti knocked in a run with a ground out to first.
W&M relievers
Tom Mayer and
Brody Mack would combine to retire the final nine Old Dominion hitters as Mack put away each of the six men he faced. The Tribe pitching staff combined to strike out 17 batters and allow just two walks in the contest. Four of Newsome's eight batters struck out, while Mack punched out three of the six men he faced.
The Tribe will look to turn things around this weekend as they visit Charleston to kick off CAA play. W&M will meet the Cougars for a 4:00 p.m. game Friday afternoon and start a doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
