Men's Tennis Drops Close Match at Penn, 4-3

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – William & Mary men's tennis dropped a nailbiter on the road at Penn, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon.

Despite singles wins from senior Brenden Volk and juniors Finbar Talcott and Sebastian Quiros, the Quakers (6-6) pulled out the team triumph clinching it with a pair of three-set victories on lines five and six.

How It Happened
- For the first time this season, the Tribe dropped the doubles point as Penn rallied with wins at the top two spots to claim match's initial point.
- Junior Finbar Talcott and sophomore Daniel Pellerito gave the Tribe the early lead with their sixth-straight win on line three. The duo topped Harsh Parikh and Aditya Gupta, 6-3, to improve to 7-2 on the season.
- The Quakers answered with 6-4 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to take a 1-0 lead. Dmitry Shatalin and Kevin Zhu edged sophomore Joseph Brailovsky and junior Ruo Chen, 6-4, to clinch the doubles point.
- Talcott pulled the Tribe even with a straight-sets win at No. 2 singles. The Tribe junior topped Kevin Zhu, 6-3, 6-2, for his 10th win of the season.
- After Penn answered with a win at No. 1, senior Brenden Volk knotted the match at two with a straight-sets win at No. 4. The reigning CAA Player of the Week won his seventh in a row, topping Jason Hildebrandt, 7-6, 6-3. Volk improved to 11-8 on the year.
- The remaining three singles tilts at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 all went to three sets. Despite the Tribe rallying to force decisive sets at the bottom two spots, the Quakers pulled out wins to cement the team victory.
- Penn increased its lead to 3-2 thanks to an Aditya Gupta victory at No. 5.
- After dropping the opening set, 6-2, to Harsh Parikh at No. 6, sophomore Oren Vasser won the second, 6-4, to send it to a third set. The Penn freshman held off Vasser in the final set tiebreaker, 7-6, to clinch the Quaker win.
- Junior Sebastian Quiros won its second match in a row to round out the contest. After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker to Dmitry Shatalin, Quiros picked up the second, 7-5. He improved to 11-7 with a third-set super tiebreaker win.
