William & Mary freshman
Daniel Layton (Waynesburg, Pa.) got off to a strong start Friday at the IC4A Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boston, setting collegiate-bests in three of the four events contested and is on freshman-record pace in the heptathlon after day one. The heptathlon was the only men's event to get started on Friday, and will finish with the final three component events on Saturday.
Live Results
Layton is ninth overall in the standings after four events with 2,357 points, but stands just four points out of eighth place, which would gain him not only All-East honors, but also score team points for W&M. His total is 111 points above his first-day total at George Mason earlier this season. In that meet, he finished with 4,371 points, 110 points behind the freshman record set by
Marty Ross '10 back in 2006, which means Layton is currently on pace to overtake Ross and hold the rookie mark for the Tribe.
In the component events, Layton started out with a 7.56 in the 60m dash for ninth place, and then hit 6.12m (20-1) in the long jump for a collegiate-best mark and eighth overall. The shot put was his best by finish, taking sixth with another collegiate-best at 10.74m (35-3), before finishing with his third collegiate-best mark, 1.67m (5-5.75) for eighth in the high jump.
Action on Saturday at the IC4A Championships begins at 10 a.m., and continues all day.
