Sydney Wagner garnered Preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association honors, the league announced on Tuesday. The CAA held its annual digital conference media day on Thursday, announcing its predicted order of finish and preseason All-CAA awards along with coach and player interviews and media Zoom call.
Wagner ranked third on the team at 8.3 points per contests in 2019-20 and is one of the top 3-point shooters in the CAA. Wagner came ninth in the league, knocking down 46 3-pointers last season and was 13th in CAA games in 3-point shooting at 34.1%. She appeared in all 29 games as a reserve during her sophomore campaign and scored in double figures on 13 occasions. Wagner scored a season-high 15 points in the season-opening win at Army thanks to four 3-pointers. She also came up huge in the fourth quarter of the Tribe's victory at CAA-foe Charleston, scoring eight of her 12 points in the period, including back-to-back 3-pointers in the final 3:22 as W&M rallied from a two-point deficit.
As a team, the Tribe was picked eighth in the preseason standings by vote of the league coaches. James Madison was the preseason pick to win the league with 76 points and six first-place votes, edging Drexel who had 65 points and two first-place votes. Towson (60 points) was third, while Elon (54) and Northeastern tied for fourth. Delaware (44), Charleston (36), W&M (33), UNCW (15) and Hofstra (12) rounded out the preseason rankings.
Last season, W&M was picked seventh in the preseason before finishing a program-best third in the final league standings with a school-record 12 conference wins. The Tribe, which returns three starters and a number of key contributors from last season, also set school records for overall wins (21) and road victories (11).
Towson's Kionna Jeter was named the CAA Preseason Player of the Year. She was joined on the first team by Delaware's Jasmine Dickey, Northeastern's Alexis Hill, James Madison's Kiki Jefferson and Drexel's Keishana Washington. The second team was comprised of Charleston's Arynn Eady and Latrice Perkins, Northeastern's Stella Clark, Elon's Ariel Colon and Hofstra's Jaylen Hines. Charleston's Tyler Collins, Drexel's Hannah Nihill, UNCW's Carol‐Anne Obusek, Elon's Brie Perpignan, James Madison's Brianna Tinsley joined Wagner on the honorable mention list.
The Tribe opens the 2020-21 season on the road at Old Dominion on Thursday, Dec. 3. W&M's home opener is set for Sunday, Dec. 6, against Richmond.
