First-Place CAA Showdown Tips at 2 PM on Saturday Afternoon

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – A match-up of the lone remaining unbeaten teams in the Colonial Athletic Association, 4-0 William & Mary men's basketball hosts 5-0 Charleston at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Along with first place on the line, the contest features the top two players in the league in the Tribe's Nathan Knight, who leads the country in double-doubles, and the Cougars' Grant Riller, who ranks sixth nationally in scoring and third among active Division I players in career points. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. from Kaplan Arena, and the game will be broadcast on FloHoops.

Saturday's game will be a Faculty/Staff Night as well as Griffin's Kids Club Day. All W&M faculty and staff can claim up to 4 complimentary tickets, while all Griffin's Kids Club members receive complimentary admission to the game. Friends and family can purchase discounted $8 mezzanine tickets. It is also WJCC School Day with students and families receiving discounted $8 mezzanine tickets. 

All Tribe home games will be streamed on FloHoops. A FloHoops subscription is $12.50 per month or $95.88 per year ($7.99 per month) and provides access to 130 CAA men's basketball games, as well as special features.

W&M News and Notes
- W&M is 4-0 to start CAA play for the fourth time in school history. The Tribe became the first program in the history of the CAA to start 3-0 with all three wins on the road. W&M has started 5-0 in CAA play on two occasions.
 
- W&M's offense has been hitting on all cylinders with the start of league play. In CAA games, the Tribe leads the league in field goal % (53.7), effective field goal % (60.2), 2-point % (63.8) and free throw % (83.9) along with ranking second in offensive efficiency (114.3). Overall, W&M ranks seventh nationally in effective field goal % (55.8), 24th in field goal % (48.0), 65th in 3-point % (36.4) and 69th in free throw % (74.0).
 
- Defensively, the Tribe has been strong in the early part of the league slate. In CAA games, W&M ranks second in the league in scoring (65.2), field goal % (.405), 3-point % (.295), effective field goal % (.459) and 2-point % (.468), while ranking third in defensive efficiency (97.2). The Tribe has held each of its last three opponents to less than 65 points. Overall, W&M leads the CAA in field goal % defense (.411). This season, the Tribe is 8-0 when holding teams to less than 70 points and 7-0 when teams fail to shoot 40% from the field.
 
- Senior Nathan Knight posted double-doubles in each of the last three games and leads the country with 13 on the year. He is one of three players nationally averaging 19 points and 10 rebounds per game. Knight ranks 22nd nationally in rebounding (10.3) and 28th in scoring (19.9). He also ranks fifth nationally, among players with a 28% or higher usage rate, in offensive rating according to KenPom.com (117.8).
 
- Knight and Andy Van Vliet have been double trouble for Tribe opponents. They are the only teammates in the country averaging 15 points and nine rebounds per game. They are only the fourth teammates to do so since 1992-93. Knight and Van Vliet are also the only pair of teammates in the country with at least eight double-doubles apiece. Along with Knight leading the country, Van Vliet is 14th at eight double-doubles. They have both tallied a double-double in the same game six times, including the win over UNCW on Thursday.
 
- The Tribe was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I Team of the Week on Monday. Last week, W&M won three road games in a six-day stretch to start CAA play. As part of its league start, the Green and Gold swept the league's northeast road trip of the first time with wins at Hofstra and Northeastern.
 
- The three road wins last week brought W&M's total to seven on the year, which leads the country. It marked the 12th time in program history that Green and Gold picked up seven road wins.  The Tribe tied a school record with three-straight road wins to open the year, including snapping Wofford's 17-game home win streak, the fourth-longest in the country, on Nov. 12.
 
- W&M earned its first rankings in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 since 2016, coming in at No. 25 on Monday. The Tribe received votes in five of the first nine polls of the year before moving into the top 25.
 
- For a league-high third time this season, Knight was named the CAA Player of the Week on Monday. He averaged 21 points and 9.7 rebounds per game during the three CAA road wins. He scored W&M's final nine points at Northeastern including the game-winner with 1.1 seconds left. Knight, who previously earned honors on Dec. 2 and Dec. 9, tied the program record of six career honors previously held by former All-American Marcus Thornton '15.
 
- W&M head coach Dane Fischer was recently recognized by both ESPN and NCAA.com for the Tribe's success in the nonconference. NCAA.com writer Mike Lopresti ranked Fischer No. 8 on the list of first-year head coaches. ESPN's Jeff Borzello listed the Tribe head man among three coaches in his Mid-Major surprises as part of his first-year coaching scorecard.
 
- In 11 of its 17 games, the Tribe has outrebounded its opponent. W&M is 9-2 this season when it outrebounds its opponent and 41-17 over the last four seasons. The Tribe leads the CAA and ranks 50th nationally in rebounding margin (+5.7). W&M ranks second in the CAA in defensive rebounding % (76.9) and defensive rebounds per game (29.4), which rank 29th and 16th in the country, respectively.
 
- Junior Luke Loewe is enjoying a breakout season, ranking among the national leaders in shooting. He ranks third in the CAA in 3-point % (44.7) and ranks sixth in field goal % (55.3). According to KenPom.com, the 6-4 guard is 26th nationally in 3-point % against DI competition (47.7), 22nd in effective field goal % (65.7) and 31st in true shooting % (66.5). Loewe doubled his previous career-high with 26 points in the win over Morehead State.
 
- After missing nine games due to injury, sophomore Thornton Scott returned to the Tribe lineup with the start of CAA play. He is averaging 6.8 points and four assists per game in 20.3 minutes since returning to the lineup. In league games, Scott ranks second in the CAA in assists, third in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.3) and 13th in 3-point % (.400). W&M is 8-0 this season with Scott in the lineup.
 
- Knight was named to the mid-season watch list for CollegeInsider.com's Lute Olsen National Player of the Year Award and Lou Henson Mid-Major Player of the Year award. He was also selected to the Oscar Robertson Trophy Watch List by the USBWA on Dec. 6. For the second-straight year, Knight was one of 20 players named to the preseason watch list for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year award after being one of five finalists in 2019.
 
- Loewe turned in a pair of strong defensive performances in W&M's wins last week. He limited Hofstra's Desure Buie to 3-of-14 from the field, 1-of-7 from 3 and 10 points in 32 minutes. Buie, who is averaging 18.8 ppg, bookended the W&M game with 35 points at Towson (12/30) and a career-high 44 points vs. Elon (1/4). Loewe followed that by limiting Northeastern's Jordan Roland to 3-of-14 shooting, including 1-of-5 from 3-point range, and a season-low seven points in 30 minutes. Roland entered the game ranked seventh nationally at 22.2 points per game.
