RICHMOND, Va. – William & Mary freshman
Kieran Baskett was named the Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. The rookie goalkeeper turned in stellar performances in helping the Tribe to a pair of 1-1 draws against No. 24-ranked NC State on Tuesday night and versus UNCW in the league opener on Saturday.
In the 1-1 draw with UNCW, Baskett tallied 11 saves, which marked the most for a W&M goalkeeper since 1998 when Adin Brown posted 12 against St. John's. The 11 stops were the most in a CAA game since 2015 and the eighth-highest total in the country this season.
The performance against the Seahawks came after a standout effort in a 1-1 tie with NC State on Sept. 10. He tallied seven saves, including a couple of point-blank stops, against the nationally-ranked Wolfpack.
Baskett currently leads the CAA in save percentage (.821), saves (23) and saves per game (5.75). He also ranks fourth in the league in goals against average at 1.12. Baskett is 24th nationally in total saves and 36th in save percentage.
Baskett and the Tribe head to the City of Brotherly Love for its first of two straight in Philadelphia on Tuesday, Sept. 17, against Saint Joseph's at 7 p.m. The contest will be broadcast on ESPN+. W&M returns to CAA play and Philadelphia on Saturday, Sept. 21, for a 6 p.m. kick at Drexel.
