Former Women's Basketball Standout and Assistant Coach Chanel Murchison Named Head Coach at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

CLAREMONT, Cailf. – Former William & Mary women's basketball standout and assistant coach Chanel Murchison '13 was named the head coach of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps the school announced on Tuesday morning.

"I'd first like to thank President Chodosh, Director of Athletics Erica Perkins Jasper, and the entire search committee in entrusting me with the leadership of the women's basketball program here at CMS," said Murchison through a CMS press release on Tuesday. "CMS Athletics represents everything I value in the experience of student-athletes, developing individuals who strive to excel in all that they do. This program has seen great success and has a lot to offer in the future. I would also be remiss not to express my gratitude toward the communities at William & Mary and John Carroll, both of which impacted my ability to confidently take on this role."

During her two seasons back in Williamsburg, W&M won 31 games, and she helped round out the careers of the most victorious senior classes in school history. A mentor to both the guards and forwards, Murchison helped four Tribe players take home nine All-CAA Awards, including Bianca Boggs, who was named to back-to-back CAA First-Team honors. In 2017-18, the Tribe led the CAA in blocked shots (218) and blocked shots per game (7.3), which ranked fourth and third in the NCAA, respectively. Both numbers are single-season school records. In 2018-19, the Tribe led the conference in assists per game (15.3) for the fourth time in five seasons.

"As an alumna and coach of the Tribe women's basketball program, we are thrilled that Chanel has been named the head coach at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps," head women's basketball coach Ed Swanson said. "Although we are sad to lose her leadership on and off the court, we wish her the best with the Athenas, and she knows she is always a part of the Tribe."

Murchison was a part of the Tribe women's basketball program for five seasons and appeared in 88 games with 45 starts over three seasons of action. She finished her career with 129 points, 175 rebounds 81 assists, four blocks, and 46 steals. She was also very involved in different facets of the athletic department working with the marketing and sports information departments.

Originally from Stafford, Va., she graduated with B.A. in Economics from W&M in 2013. She went on to earn her MBA from John Carroll in 2016.
