Women's Tennis Continues CAA Winning Ways at James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. – William & Mary continued its dominance over Colonial Athletic Association and in-state foe James Madison with a 4-3 win over Sunday afternoon. The Tribe won its 13th straight against league competition and 34th in a row versus the Dukes. W&M (7-11) improved to 141-18 (.887) all-time against the CAA and 46-1 (.979) against JMU .
 
The Green and Gold captured the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead over the Dukes (11-8), who were coming of their third CAA win of the year over Charleston on Saturday. Senior Clara Tanielian and sophomore Vitoria Okuyama clinched the initial point of the match with a win at the top spot.
 
In singles, the Tribe won five of six first sets and the first three matches off the court to cement the team triumph. Freshman Mila Saric and senior Lauren Goodman won convincingly at No. 4 and No. 5 singles to increase the lead to 3-0. Both players remained undefeated in CAA play at 3-0 as well.
 
Junior Natalia Perry, who was an All-CAA First Teamer last season, provided the clincher for the Green and Gold with a triumph at No. 2. She bounced Abby Amos, 6-1, 6-3, to give the Tribe an insurmountable 4-0 lead.
 
How It Happened
- The Tribe captured the doubles point for the seventh time in the last 10 matches and the 11th occasion in 18 contests overall. After winning CAA Doubles Team of the Week on Tuesday, Goodman and junior Charlotte Madson gave W&M the early lead in pairs play. The Tribe tandem topped Amanda Nord and Michelle Los Acros, 6-3, at the No. 3 spot. Goodman and Madson won their second in a row and moved to 5-3 on line three.
- After a JMU win at No. 2, the Tribe's top pair of senior Clara Tanielian and sophomore Vitoria Okuyama clinched the initial point of the match. The Tribe tandem downed Abby Amos and Daniela Voloh, 6-4, to improve to 7-2 on the year and a perfect 3-0 in CAA play.
- Saric dropped just three games in a dominating win at No. 4 to increase the Tribe lead to 2-0. The Tribe rookie rolled past Jona Roka, who was an All-CAA Second Team pick last season, by a 6-1, 6-2 score line. Saric pushed her team-leading record to 15-10 overall and 11-5 in dual-match competition.
- Like Saric, Goodman remained undefeated in CAA play at 3-0 and extended the Tribe margin to 3-0 with a win at No. 5. She won convincingly over Emma Petersen, 6-1, 6-2, for her 12th win of the season. Petersen entered the match on a roll for the Dukes at 21-8 overall and an impressive 14-3 on line five.
- Perry put the finishing touches on the Tribe victory with a win at No. 2. She dropped just four total games in handing Abby Amos a 6-1, 6-3 setback to clinch the team triumph. Perry won her 13th match of the season and improved to 5-4 at No. 2.
- All three JMU wins came in third-set super tiebreakers after the Tribe had clinched the team victory.
 
Up Next
The Tribe wraps up its in-state road swing at Liberty on Monday, April 8, at 10 a.m. The match is slated for the Cook Tennis Center in Lynchburg, weather permitting. It was originally scheduled for a 1 p.m. start but moved up to 10 a.m. due to the forcasted weather.
