Women's Tennis Wraps Up Regular Season Road Slate with In-State Pair

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's tennis team hits the road for a pair of matches against in-state competition. Fresh off a 5-2 win over VCU last week, the Tribe heads to league foe James Madison for a rematch of last season's Colonial Athletic Association Championship match on Sunday, April 7, at noon. The Green and Gold wraps up the road swing by traveling to Liberty on Monday, April 8, at 1 p.m.  
 
Scouting the Tribe
- W&M enters the weekend at 6-11 on the year and are coming off an impressive 5-2 win at reigning Atlantic 10 Champion VCU on March 30. It was the Rams first home loss in 12 matches this season.
- The Tribe claimed the doubles point for the sixth time in the last nine matches against VCU thanks to wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Junior Natalia Perry and freshman Mila Saric improved to 10-4 at No. 2, while senior Lauren Goodman and junior Charlotte Madson clinched the point and upped their ledger to 4-3 on line three.
- In singles, juniors Rosie Cheng and Charlotte Madson extended the Green and Gold advantage to 3-0 with straight-sets wins at No. 2 and No. 6. Madson won her fifth-straight match and improved to 9-6 in dual-match competition.
- Senior Clara Tanielian and Saric cemented the Tribe win with come-from-behind three-set wins at No. 3 and No. 4. Saric clinched the Tribe victory for the third time this season, while Tanielian won her 10th match of the year and improved to 6-4 at No. 3.
 - For the third time this season, W&M swept the CAA weekly awards. Cheng earned her first CAA Singles Player of the Week award of 2019 and third of her career. She rolled to a dominating 6-1, 6-1 over Anna Rasmussen, who is a two-time All-Atlantic 10 First-Team selection, at No. 2 singles. Goodman and Madson received the doubles team of the week honor after clinching the initial point of the match with a victory at No. 3.
- Along with the two awards this week, the Tribe has won eight total CAA weekly awards, including four singles and four doubles accolades.
- Saric leads the Tribe with two CAA Player of the Week awards, earning the honor on Feb. 13 and March 6. She won the latter after clinching W&M's 4-2 win over Big Ten foe Maryland. Saric owns a team-best singles ledger to 14-10 overall and 10-5 in dual-match play.
- Junior Natalia Perry was named the CAA Player of the Week on March 13 after upsetting No. 101-ranked Natalie Novotna of Virginia Tech. Perry ranks second on the team with 12 singles wins, including six in dual-match play at the top two spots.
- Perry and Saric earned CAA Doubles Team of the Week honors on Jan. 30 and March 13. Tanielian and sophomore Vitoria Okuyama, who are 5-2 at No. 1 doubles, garnered the league's weekly doubles distinction on Feb. 27.
- W&M is 2-0 in CAA play this season thanks to a 5-2 win at Elon on Feb. 10 and a 7-0 victory over Delaware on March 16. The Green and Gold has won 12 straight against CAA competition. Overall since the first season of CAA tennis, the Tribe is 140-18 (.886) against league opponents. In matches with current CAA teams, the Tribe is 84-4 (.955) all-time and 63-3 (.955) with those teams as members of the league.
- W&M has captured the doubles point in 10 of its 16 matches.
- Four of the Tribe's setbacks this season have come to top-50 opponents, including losses to current No. 20 Virginia, No. 22 Wake Forest, No. 37 Princeton and No. 47 South Florida. In total, W&M played six major conference opponents, including a trio of ACC foes, in 2019.
- W&M's remaining 2019 schedule includes one match against a top-50 team. The Green and Gold hosts current No. 32 Old Dominion on April 13.
 
Scouting James Madison
- The Dukes enter the weekend at 10-7 overall and 2-0 in CAA play and will take on Charleston on Saturday before hosting the Tribe on Sunday.  JMU is 3-1 at home this season.
- James Madison had its four-match win streak snapped at VCU, 5-2, on March 28. During the streak, the Dukes tallied wins over Towson (7-0), Richmond (6-1), UNCG (6-1) and Elon (4-3).
- W&M and JMU have three common opponents in Richmond, Elon and VCU. The Tribe is a perfect 3-0 against the trio, while the Dukes went 2-1.
- Freshman Daria Afanasyeva holds down the No. 1 singles post for JMU. She owns 13 wins on the year and is 8-8 at the top spot.
- Seniors Emma Peterson and Abby Amos lead the Dukes with 20 and 19 singles wins, respectively. Amos is 10-7 at No. 2, while Peterson in 13-3 at No. 5. 
- James Madison has captured the doubles point in eight of its 17 matches. Amos and freshman Daniela Voloh lead the way for the Dukes at 11-9 overall and 6-5 at the top spot.  
 
Series History: W&M vs. JMU
- W&M has dominated the all-time series with James Madison at 45-1.
- The Tribe is currently riding a 33-match win streak against the Dukes dating back to the 1984 season.
- The Green and Gold has eliminated the JMU from the CAA Tournament each of the last four seasons, including two championship matches in the last three campaigns.
- Last season, W&M downed the Dukes twice, including a 5-2 win during the regular season and a 4-0 victory in the CAA Championship match.
- The Tribe travels to Harrisonburg for the first time since 1994. W&M is 6-0 against the Dukes on the road.
 
Scouting Liberty
- Liberty is in the midst of a five-match homestand and sits at 11-6 overall. The Flames are 4-1 in the Atlantic Sun and host North Florida on Saturday before hosting the Tribe on Monday.
- LU played 14 of its first 15 matches on the road. Liberty returned home to down Lipscomb, 4-3, and Stetson, 7-0, in its two most recent contests. The Flames are 3-0 at home this season.
 - The Tribe and Flames have two common opponents in VCU and George Washington. Both teams topped the Colonials by convincing margins, while the Tribe topped the Rams, 5-2, and LU dropped a 5-2 decision to VCU.
- Maria Medina leads Liberty with a 20-7 singles mark. She has played at each of the top four positions in the singles lineup, going 9-6 in dual-match play.
- Kalani Soli owns a 19-6 singes mark, while Ashley Bongart has tallied 18 singles wins. Soli is a perfect 10-0 at the No. 2 post, while Bongart is 5-4 at the top spot.
- In doubles, Liberty has been dominant in dual-match play, winning the initial point in 14 of its 17 matches. The Flames are 32-12 in dual-match doubles matches and have won the doubles point in nine-straight matches.
- Medina and Lara Soares are on a seven-match win streak at No. 1 and own a 17-4 overall mark with a 11-2 ledger at the top spot. At No. 2, Soli and Grace Hashiguchi have won six in a row and are 8-1. Bongart and Anna Dollar own a 15-7 overall mark with a 10-3 ledger at No. 3.
 
Series History: W&M vs. Liberty
- The Tribe and Flames meet for just the second time.
- W&M travels to Liberty for the first time in dual-match action.
- The Green and Gold posted a 6-1 win in the only previous meeting in Williamsburg during the 2016 season.
 
Up Next
- The Tribe wraps up the regular season at home against No. 32-ranked Old Dominion on Saturday, April 13. The match carries a 2 p.m. start time from the Millie West Tennis Facility, weather permitting.
- It will also serve as Senior Day for the Tribe as they recognized Deepa Dhore, Lauren Goodman and Clara Tanielian who will compete in their final home matches.
