ELON, N.C. – The William & Mary women's tennis team jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in Saturday morning's Colonial Athletic Association Championship match at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. James Madison though rallied behind a quartet of singles wins, including two in three sets, to end the Tribe's four-year grip on the league championship and claim the Dukes' first crown.
How It Happened
- The Tribe once again claimed the doubles point without dropping a match at the CAA Championship, marking the sixth time in the last seven matches the W&M took the initial point of the contest. In total, the Green and Gold won the doubles point for the 14th time in its 23 matches.
- Senior
Lauren Goodman and junior
Charlotte Madson completed a perfect CAA Championship in doubles with a 6-2 win over Amanda Nord and Michelle Los Arcos at No. 3. The Tribe duo won for the sixth time in the last seven matches and 11th time overall this season. Goodman and Madson improved to 9-3 on line three.
- For the ninth time this season, the Tribe's top pairing of senior
Clara Tanielian and sophomore
Vitoria Okuyama clinched the doubles point. They dropped just one game in a dominant 6-1 win over JMU's Abby Amos and Daniela Voloh. Tanielian and Okuyama won for the fourth time in the last five matches and improved to 10-3 overall with nine wins at the top spot.
- Freshman
Mila Saric increased the Tribe's lead to a 2-0 with a victory at the No. 4 spot. The Tribe rookie won her fourth in a row and her third at the CAA Championship, topping Emma Petersen, 6-1, 6-3. Saric ran her team-leading ledger to 19-11 overall and 15-6 in dual-match play, including an 8-4 mark at No. 4.
- James Madison answered with straight-sets wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles to tie the match at two. Abby Amos claimed the second singles post, while Daniela Voloh picked up the victory at No. 3.
- In total, the Tribe won the opening set at four of the six singles spots, but the Dukes responded to force decisive third sets at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6.
- One day after being the hero on line six, Madson jumped out to a set lead, claiming the first, 6-4, over Nord. The JMU freshman rallied to take the second, 6-0, and then finished strong in the third to pick up the 7-5 win and give the Dukes a 3-2 lead.
- At No. 5, Goodman and Jona Roka split the opening two sets by matching 6-4 score lines. The Dukes junior clinched the CAA title by winning the final set, 6-0.
- Saturday's loss was the Tribe's first in the CAA Championship since 2014 and its first to a CAA foe in the last 16 matches. Winners of 26 of the CAA's 35 all-time crowns, W&M fell to 17-5 in the CAA Championship match.
