WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Playing short-handed with only five healthy players, the William & Mary men's tennis team suffered a narrow 4-3 setback to visiting Georgetown on Wednesday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
Needing to win the only two doubles matches to claim the initial point of the contest, the Tribe (3-13) received wins at the top two spots to open up a 1-0 lead. Sophomores
Sebastian Quiros and
Finbar Talcott won at the No. 1 and No. 3 singles posts, respectively, to increase the lead to 3-1.
The Hoyas responded with triumphs at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to rally past the Tribe for the team victory.
How It Happened
- Georgetown led early in doubles with the default victory at No. 3, but the Tribe duo of Talcott and freshman
Oren Vasser evened things with a win on line two. Playing together for the first time, Talcott and Vasser topped Rohan Kamdar and Connor Lee, 6-2.
- Junior
Brenden Volk and sophomore
Chen Ruo clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Michael Chen and Charlie Sharton at the top spot. The Tribe pair won its fifth match of the season and third at No. 1.
- After the Hoyas pulled even with a default win at No. 6 singles, Quiros rolled to a straight-sets victory at the top spot to put W&M back in front. He bounced Kamdar, 6-2, 6-2, for his third win in four tries at No. 1. Quiros leads W&M with an 18-13 singles mark.
- Three days after clinching the Tribe's 4-3 win over DePaul, Talcott won his second straight and extended the W&M advantage to 3-1. The Tribe sophomore posted a tiebreaker win, 7-6 (1), in the opening set before dropping just one game in the second set, 6-1, of his victory over Lee at No. 3. Talcott won his 12th match of the year and pushed his ledger to 5-3 on line three.
- Georgetown pulled even with straight-sets wins at No. 2 and No. 5. Charlie Sharton defeated Ruo, 6-2, 6-4, at the fifth spot, and Michael Chen handed Volk a 6-3, 6-4 setback on line two.
- The match came down to the No. 4 post. After Georgetown's Andrew Rozanov won the opening set, 6-2, Vasser jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second. Rozanov responded by winning six of the final seven games to clinch the Hoyas team triumph.
