WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's tennis team continues a three-match road swing with its lone Colonial Athletic Association tilt of the regular season at Elon on Sunday, March 10. The contest carries at 2 p.m. start time from the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, weather permitting.
Scouting the Tribe
- W&M is coming off a narrow 5-2 setback at Virginia Tech on Monday. The contest came down to a quartet of three-set matches, and the Hokies won all four.
- The Tribe took the doubles point behind a top-25 upset from junior
Brenden Volk and sophomore
Chen Ruo. The Green and Gold tandem knocked off No. 25-ranked Henrik Korsgaard and Alex Ribeiro at the top spot, 7-5, for their second nationally-ranked win of the year.
- Sophomores
Sebastian Quiros and
Finbar Talcott notched their second-straight win at the No. 3 position.
- Ruo increased the Tribe advantage to 2-0 over the Hokies with his second win in a row at the No. 6 singles post. The Tribe sophomore topped Evan Fragistas, 7-5, 6-4, for his eighth win of the year.
- For their efforts against Virginia Tech, Ruo and Volk were named the CAA Doubles Team of the Week. It was the second-straight weekly honor for the Green and Gold after senior
Tristan Bautil and freshman
Oren Vasser were honored in doubles as well on Feb. 27.
- Half of the Tribe's losses this season have come to teams currently in the national top 50, including No. 4 Virginia, No. 9 Florida, No. 23 Penn, No. 36 Penn State and No. 46 Louisville. Half the Tribe's 10 matches have also come against major conference opponents.
- Quiros leads the Tribe with a 14-11 singles record and has a team-best three dual-match singles triumphs.
- Qurios and Talcott both posted nationally-ranked singles wins during the Tribe's opening three dual-matches of the season. Quiros knocked off No. 38-ranked Gianni Ross of Virginia in three-sets, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2. It was W&M's highest ranked dual-match singles win since 2010. Talcott topped No. 104-ranked Brandon Lancaster of Louisville, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 2 on Jan. 27 for his first career ranked win.

Sebastian Quiros joined a W&M-record 164 Provost Awards for 2018-19 school year. The Provost Awards, now in their 16th year, recognize athletes who have a cumulative GPA over 3.5 in their careers.
Scouting Elon
- The Phoenix enters the match at 8-3 overall and 1-1 in CAA play following a 7-0 sweep of James Madison at home on Thursday.
- Along with the win over JMU, Elon dropped its only other CAA match so far this season, 6-1, at UNCW.
- The Phoenix owns a number of impressive wins, including road victories at Rice, 4-3, and at ACC foe Clemson, 5-2.
- W&M and Elon have one common opponent this season in Liberty. The Tribe dropped a 6-1 decision at the Flames, while the Phoenix topped LU, 5-2, at home on Feb. 26.
- Elon's other two losses came in narrow 4-3 fashion at ACC foe Duke and VCU.
- Senior Felipe Sarrasague leads the Phoenix with an impressive 9-1 record at No. 1 singles. He was the CAA Player of the Year last season and is a three-time All-CAA First Team pick.
- Along with Sarrasague, seniors Mario Paccini and Felipe Osses-Konig highlight an experienced top of the Phoenix lineup. Paccini, who is a three-time All-CAA selection, is 6-5 at the top two spots, while Osses-Konig owns an 8-4 ledger mainly at No. 3.
- Elon has claimed the doubles point in five of its 11 matches. As a team, the Phoenix is 6-4 at the top doubles post, but just 6-11 on line two and three.
- Sarrasague and Taylor Foote lead the way for the Phoenix going 3-3 at No. 1.
Series History: W&M vs. Elon
- The Tribe leads the all-time series with the Phoenix at 5-2, including a narrow 4-3 win in Williamsburg last season.
- It marks the fifth-straight season in which W&M and Elon have met.
- W&M has twice defeated the Phoenix in the CAA Semifinals in both 2015 and 2017.
- Last season, the Tribe posted singles wins at No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to top the Phoenix.
Finbar Talcott clinched the Green and Gold win with a three-set victory at the No. 5 post.
