SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – William & Mary junior
Nathan Knight was named one of five finalists for the 2019 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced on Friday. Named after Class of 1995 Hall of Famer, Pac-12 Player of the Century and three-time NCAA Champion Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the annual honor in its fifth year recognizes the top centers in men's college basketball.
An All-CAA First Team selection, Knight has enjoyed a standout junior campaign. He is averaging 21 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.2 blocked shots per game. Knight is the first college basketball player since Tim Duncan at Wake Forest in 1996-97 to average 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots per game. Knight's scoring average is the highest for a Tribe player since 1968 and his 630 points rank fifth in program history.
A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 21 student-athletes in October, which was narrowed to 10 candidates in February before the five finalists were announced. This month, the finalists will be presented to Mr. Abdul-Jabbar and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The winner of the 2019 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award will be determined by a combination of fan votes and input from the Basketball Hall of Fame's selection committee.
