WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Sophomore
Finbar Talcott rallied from a set deficit to clinch William & Mary's 4-3 comeback win over DePaul on Saturday afternoon at the
Millie West Tennis Facility. The Tribe (3-12) won for the third time in its last four matches.
After DePaul (10-10) claimed the doubles point and opened up a 2-0 lead with a victory at No. 5 singles, junior
Brenden Volk (No. 2) and freshman
Oren Vasser (No. 4) turned in a pair of dominating singles performances to draw the Green and Gold even.
The Blue Demons again moved in front 3-2 with a straight-sets win at No. 1 setting up the decisive three-set matches at No. 3 and No. 6. On line six, sophomore
Chen Ruo won the final three games of the third set to defeat Tripp Tuff and once again tie the match.
After rallying from a set deficit, Talcott again found himself in a hole, trailing 3-2 and down a break in the third set. The Tribe sophomore ripped off four-straight games and came to the net for the match-clinching volley and a 6-3 win over Fran Tonejc at No. 3.
How It Happened
- After DePaul won the first doubles match off the court, W&M answered with a win at No. 2. Senior
Tristan Bautil and freshman
Oren Vasser jumped out to a 4-1 lead. On match point, Bautil won a volley battle at the net, giving the Tribe a 6-3 win. Bautil and Vasser won their third straight and upped their mark to 5-1 at No. 2.
- In the deciding doubles match at one, junior
Brenden Volk and sophomore
Chen Ruo earned a break in the 10th game to pull even at five and the match headed to a tiebreaker. DePaul's Christopher Casati and Boris Spanjaard jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the break, before the Tribe tandem rallied to tie the match at six. Casati and Spanjaard won the final two points to clinch the initial point of the match.
- After DePaul increased its lead to 2-0, the Tribe rallied to pull even behind convincing wins at No. 2 and No. 4 from Volk and Vasser. On line two, Volk dropped just two total games in routing Luuk Wassenaar, 6-1, 6-1. The Tribe junior won his 10th singles match of the season and improved to 3-1 at No. 2.
- Vasser won his second-straight match and knotted the contest at two. The Green and Gold rookie made quick work of Christopher Casati, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4. Vasser won his 12th match overall and fifth on line four.
- After a DePaul win at the top spot, Ruo pulled the Tribe even again at three with a three-set win at No. 6. The Tribe sophomore ripped off five-straight games to rally past Tripp Tuff in the opening set, 7-5. Tuff rallied with a 6-1 win in the second, but Ruo pulled out the match claiming the final three games of the final set for a 6-3 victory. Ruo won his 10th match of the season and improved to 4-2 at No. 6.
- At No. 3, Fran Tonejc won the final five games of the first set to take an early lead over Talcott, 7-5. The Tribe sophomore answered with a 6-4 win the second, breaking Tonjec in the final game of the set. Tonjec won three-straight games and led by a break at 3-2 in the third set. Talcott responded by winning the final four games of the set to clinch the Tribe's victory. Talcott won his 11th match of the season and improved to 4-3 at the No. 3 spot.

The Tribe wraps up its four-match homestand hosting its second-straight Big East opponent in Georgetown on Tuesday, April 2. The contest is slated for a 3 p.m. start time from the
Millie West Tennis Facility, weather permitting. In the case of inclement weather, the match will move indoors to the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
