Women's Tennis Rolls to 12th-Straight Win Against CAA Competition

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary continued to show itself as the class of the Colonial Athletic Association on Saturday afternoon with a convincing 7-0 sweep of league counterpart Delaware at the Millie West Tennis Facility.

The Tribe (5-9, 2-0 CAA) dropped just six total games in sweeping doubles, and buoyed by the return of junior Rosie Cheng to the singles lineup, W&M won all six spots in straight sets. Speaking of Cheng, she dropped just one game in her win at No. 2 after returning from a three-match injury hiatus. At the top four singles spots, the Tribe surrendered just 11 total games in commanding victories.

In total, the Green and Gold won its 12th-straight match against CAA competition and its second of the year. Overall since the first season of CAA tennis in 1986, the Tribe is 140-18 (.886) against league opponents. In matches with current CAA teams, the Tribe is 84-4 (.955) all-time and 63-3 (.955) with those teams as members of the league.

How It Happened
- The Tribe wasted little time taking a 1-0 lead, sweeping doubles from Delaware (3-9, 0-1 CAA) by matching 6-2 scores at all three spots. Senior Lauren Goodman and junior Charlotte Madson won four-straight games on the way to a 6-2 win over Sarah Whited and Sarah Hall at No. 3. The duo won for the fifth time this season and improved to 3-2 at No. 3.
- For the fourth time in the last six matches, senior Clara Tanielian and sophomore Vitoria Okuyama clinched the doubles point with a win at No. 1. The Tribe tandem improved to 6-1 on the year with its fifth win at the top spot, defeating Tayo Adetunji and Annie Jaskulski.
- The reigning CAA Doubles Team of the Week, junior Natalia Perry and freshman Mila Saric, notched its fifth win in the last six matches, upending Caragh Courtney and Emily Gotkiewicz on line two. They upped their season mark to 9-3 and 4-1 at No. 2.
- In her return to the Tribe lineup, Cheng turned in a dominating effort at No. 2. She dropped just one game in rolling to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Caragh Courtney. It was Cheng's seventh win of the year, her second in a row and fourth in dual-match play. Cheng remained undefeated in her career against CAA foes at 10-0.
- Classmate Natalia Perry wasted little time extending the Tribe lead to 3-0 with a commanding win at the top spot. She won seven-straight games between the first and second sets to roll past Viva Laas, 6-2, 6-0. Perry won her second in a row at the top spot. It marked her 12th win overall and sixth in dual-match play.
- For the second time this season, Saric notched the clincher with a victory at No. 4. She bounced Emily Gotkiewicz, 6-2, 6-3, for her fifth win in the last six matches. The Tribe rookie pushed her team-best singles mark to 13-8, including a 9-3 dual-match ledger.
- Tanielian dropped just three games in her straight-sets win at No. 3. She upended Sarah Hall, 6-0, 6-3, to even her singles ledger at 9-9 on the year and improve to 5-3 at No. 3.
- Madson and Goodman rounded out the Tribe's dominating win with straight-sets triumphs at No. 5 and No. 6. Trailing Sarah Whited, 5-4, in the opening set on line six, Madson won the final three games of the set and then rolled in the second, 6-2, to claim her second-straight win. She won her eighth match of the year and evened her dual-match ledger at 6-6.
- Goodman won for the fifth time in her last six matches, topping Tayo Adetunji, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 5. She ran her season mark to 11-8, her dual-match record to 7-4 and remained undefeated at 3-0 on line five.
