W&M News and Notes
• W&M and ODU will meet for the 138
th time in all-time series history. The Monarchs hold an all-time series lead of 84-53 in the storied rivalry. However, the Tribe swept the regular season series with the Monarchs last year. W&M scored five runs in four innings to outlast ODU, 5-2, on the road, before scoring two critical late runs in a 4-3 home win.
Â
• With a 12-1 record, the Tribe is now off to its best start since 1999. The '99 season was the last time the Green and Gold won 12 of its first 13 games. The win-loss percentage of .923 ranks sixth in the NCAA. The Tribe is one of eight teams with one loss or less.
Â
• It is difficult to get off to such a strong start without an extensive winning streak. Following its third three-game sweep of the season, the Tribe improved its winning streak to nine games in a row. It the longest stretch of consecutive wins since 2001. That is a good omen as the Tribe earned its first automatic bid to the NCAA tournament in '01.
Â
• Dominant pitching has been a staple for the Tribe in its early success. The team ranks 16
th in the nation with a 2.62 ERA. The W&M pitching staff limited its opponent to three runs or less in 10 out of 12 games. In addition, the bullpen has conceded only 11 earned runs.
Â
• The W&M offense has provided plenty of firework over the last two weeks. The Tribe totaled 10-plus hits in six of its previous nine games. As a result, the Tribe ranks second in the CAA with a .279 batting average. Additionally, the Green and Gold is top five in the conference in RBI, doubles, triples, home runs and runs scored.
Â
• Over the course of the nine-game winning streak, freshman
Hunter Hart and sophomore
Matt McDermott have batted well over .400. Hart has held a .448 average (13-for-29) with two doubles and six RBI. McDermott has hit .441 (15-for-24), adding four doubles and 11 RBI during the stretch. Senior
Hunter Smith has provided a lot of power behind three doubles, a triple, three home runs and 13 RBI.
Â
• Rookie
Zach Tsakounis continues to pitch at an extremely high-level after earning a win and save last week. His ERA of 0.50 ranks 19
th in the NCAA. He is also the only player in the CAA with both three wins and a save. In his two appearances last week, Tsakounis tossed seven shutout innings of four-hit ball with 11 strikeouts.
Â
• The Tribe has totaled three CAA weekly awards in the early goings of 2019. Tsakounis and freshman
Tristan Snyder both won CAA Rookie of the Week honors. McDermott was also named CAA Player of the Week. McDermott and Tsakounis were the most recent recipients, earning recognition for the week of Mach 4.
Â
• So far, W&M is 2-0 against in-state rivals. The Tribe claimed a Power Five win at Virginia (2/26), 9-3, and throttled Norfolk State (3/5) with a 17-2 triumph. Following the trip to Old Dominion, the Tribe will clash with a Commonwealth rival on eight more occasions. The matchups consist of VCU (3/19), Old Dominion (3/26), Norfolk State (3/27), James Madison (4/12-14), George Mason (4/23) and Richmond (4/24).
