WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary women's tennis team hits the road for a pair of matches in the state of North Carolina on the weekend. The Tribe heads to ACC foe Wake Forest on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 10 a.m., before traveling to CAA counterpart Elon on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m. in the rematch of last season's league semifinal.
Scouting the Tribe
- The Tribe sits a 1-4 on the year after a tough 4-3 setback to Big Ten foe Purdue on Feb. 3. It was W&M's second narrow 4-3 setback of the season.
- Against the Boilers, W&M captured the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Junior

Vitoria Okuyama won the final three games at No. 2 to give W&M a 1-0 lead. It marked the third time in five matches at W&M claimed the doubles point.
- In singles, senior
Lauren Goodman and Madson posted three-set wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Goodman came from behind for a three-set win over Seira Shimizu, who had clinched Purdue's 4-3 win at Virginia Tech with a three-set victory at No. 2. Goodman improved to 6-6 on the year and 2-0 at No. 3.
- Madson topped Caitlin Calkins in three sets at No. 5 singles. The Tribe junior ran her dual-match record to 3-1 at No. 5.
- Saric remained undefeated in dual-match doubles play with a 5-0 record.

Natalia Perry and Saric were named the CAA Doubles Team of the Week on Jan. 30 after starting the season 4-0 at the No. 3 spot.
- Saturday's contest at Wake Forest marks the first of three against the ACC this season for the Green and Gold. Since 2010, W&M owns 11 victories over ACC competition, including a 2-2 record against the league last season.
- W&M's match with Elon on Sunday will be the first of three CAA tilts for the Tribe this season, including the first of two on the road. Overall since the first season of CAA tennis in 1986, the Tribe is 138-18 (.885) against league opponents. In matches with current CAA teams, the Tribe is 82-4 (.953) all-time and 61-3 (.953) with those teams as members of the league.
- Last season, the Tribe was ranked No. 2 in the ITA Atlantic Region to cap the season, which was its highest regional ranking since 2008. The Green and Gold was ranked in the national top 50 to end the year for the third time in the last four seasons coming in at No. 45 in 2018.
- W&M has won 26 of the 34 all-time CAA Championships, including each of the last four. Every player on the Tribe roster has won the league title during each of their seasons on campus.
- The Tribe is under new leadership in 2019 as former W&M assistant
Toni Bickford was named the program's 10th head coach on Sept. 24. Bickford, a 16-year coaching veteran, was the associate head coach at Old Dominion last season, earning her second career ITA Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year award. As an assistant, he helped teams to 216 wins, including 46 against nationally-ranked competition. She was the Tribe's assistant from 2008-11, helping W&M to the 2011 CAA Championship.
Scouting Wake Forest
- The Demon Deacons are 3-1 on the year after splitting its matches at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Columbia, S.C.
- Wake Forest opened the year with 7-0 sweeps of Charleston and Liberty.
- At the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, Wake Forest topped Arizona State, 4-0, on Jan. 26 before falling to No. 14-ranked South Carolina, 4-0, on Jan. 27.
- The Deacs lineup features three nationally-ranked singles players. Emma Davis is the highest ranked player at No. 51 in the country. She is 10-5 overall and 3-0 at the No. 1 spot.
- Anna Ulyashchenko, who owns six wins and a 2-1 ledger at No. 2 singles, is ranked No. 95 nationally followed by No. 122 Chandler Carter.
- In dual-match doubles action, Wake Forest is 9-2 and has claimed the points in three of four matches. Carter and Davis are 2-1 at No. 1 doubles and spend part of last season nationally ranked. M.C. Meredith and Eliza Omirou are 3-1 at No. 2, while Ulyashchenko and Anna Brylin are 3-0 at No. 3.
Series History: W&M vs. Wake Forest
- Wake Forest leads the all-time series with W&M, 22-18, but the Tribe has won eight of the last 13 meetings.
- The teams meet for the 20th-straight season on Saturday and for the 41st time in the last 43 years.
- Last season, the Green and Gold upset No. 19-ranked Wake Forest, 4-3, in Williamsburg behind
Natalia Perry's clinching victory at No. 3 singles.
- The Demon Deacons topped W&M, 7-0, in the last meeting in Winston-Salem, N.C., during the 2017 dual-match campaign.
Scouting Elon
- The Phoenix sits at 3-3 on the year. Elon dropped its season opener at No. 3 North Carolina, 6-1, before picking up a doubleheader sweep of North Carolina A&T and N.C. Central by 7-0 scores. Elon suffered two-straight 7-0 losses at Furman and Duke, before bouncing back with a 7-0 win over Mount Olive on Jan. 23.
- Elon hosts Radford on Saturday, before taking on the Tribe.
- Senior Suzanne Zenoni holds down the No. 1 spot for Elon and is 2-3 in dual-match play.
- Freshman Olivia Archer, who is 2-2 on the year, picked up the lone Phoenix victory against North Carolina at the No. 6 spot.
- Senior Maria Paraja and junior Alex Konlaev earned All-CAA Second Team honors in doubles last season. The duo is 2-1 at the No. 1 spot this season.
Series History: W&M vs. Elon
- W&M leads the all-time series with Elon at 3-0.
- It marks the fourth-straight season in which the teams have met.
- Last year, the Tribe topped the Phoenix, 4-2, in the CAA Semifinals. After Elon captured the doubles point, W&M won four of the five completed singles matches.
Rosie Cheng won in straight-sets at No. 1 singles, while
Clara Tanielian clinched the victory with a three-set win at No. 3.
- The teams meet in Elon, N.C., for the third time as the Tribe downed the Phoenix, 6-1, in 2016 as well.
