Men's Tennis Hosts Ivy League Pair This Weekend

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's tennis team returns to the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center for a pair of matches this weekend. The Green and Gold welcomes a pair of Ivy League foes to Williamsburg in Yale on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. and No. 23-ranked Penn on Sunday, Feb. 24, at 10 a.m.
 
Fans can watch all the Tribe tennis action at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center via PlaySight. The advanced sports video and analytics technology is equipped with an interactive touch-screen kiosk, plus six fully automated HD cameras. The system uses advanced image processing and analytical algorithms to capture and log stroke type, ball trajectory, speed and spin, in-depth shot data, player movement and more. PlaySight's camera-and-kiosk system is built with state-of-the-art tennis analytics technology that turns any court into a SmartCourt, offering line calling, livestreaming, instant multi-angle video replays and detailed statistics about every shot played. Both matches will be played at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center and will be live streamed via PlaySight on TribeAthletics.com/TennisLive.
 
Scouting the Tribe
- The Tribe is coming off a pair of road losses last week. W&M fell at Big Ten foe Penn State, 4-2, on Friday before dropping a 6-1 decision at Liberty on Saturday.
- The Nittany Lions marked the Tribe's fourth major conference opponent this season. W&M opened the season with three-straight power conference foes for the first time since 1993.
- Against Penn State, sophomore Sebastian Quiros and freshman Oren Vasser posted singles wins. Vasser won in straight sets at No. 4 to get W&M on the board, downing Christos Antonopoulo, 6-2, 6-3. Quiros needed three sets but took down Gabriel Nemeth in a third-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (5).
- Junior Brenden Volk and sophomore Chen Ruo won at the No. 2 doubles position in the dual match with Liberty, but the Flames pulled out the initial point of the match.
- Quiros won his second-straight match, topping Eddie Gutierrez in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. He improved his team-best singles ledger to 14-9.
- Vasser and Ruo dropped third-set super tiebreakers at No. 4 and No. 5 singles against the Flames.
- Saturday and Sunday's matches are the third and fourth against Ivy League competition for the Tribe this season. It marks the fifth-straight year that W&M faced at least three Ivy League foes.
- Of the Tribe's seven losses in 2019, four have come against teams ranked inside the national top 50, including a pair of top-10 setbacks. The Green and Gold have already played No. 4 Virginia, No. 7 Florida, No. 39 Penn State and No. 44 Louisville.
- Qurios and Finbar Talcott both posted nationally-ranked singles wins during the Tribe's opening three dual-matches of the season. Quiros knocked off No. 38-ranked Gianni Ross of Virginia in three-sets, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2. It was W&M's highest ranked dual-match singles win since 2010. Talcott topped No. 104-ranked Brandon Lancaster of Louisville, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 2 on Jan. 27 for his first career ranked win.
 
Scouting Yale
-Yale sits at 3-3 on the year after dropping both matches at the ECAC Championship by narrow 4-3 scores to Princeton and Brown. The Bulldogs opened the season winning three of their first four matches, including victories over Cal Poly, 4-3, Army, 4-2, and Quinnipiac, 7-0.
- The Tribe and Bulldogs have two common opponents in Brown and Princeton. Both teams suffered setbacks to the pair. W&M dropped home matches to Princeton, 5-2, and Brown, 4-0.
- Michael Sun has played No. 1 singles for Yale throughout the dual-match season. He sits at a team-best 11-9 overall and 2-3 at the top spot.
- Dylan King is 10-9 overall and a perfect 6-0 at No. 2 singles post, while Ryan Cheng is 4-2 at No. 3 with nine wins overall.
- In doubles, Sun and King are 3-3 at the No. 1 post, while Cheng and Cody Lin are 5-1 at the No. 2 spot.
 
Series History: W&M vs. Yale
- The Tribe and Bulldogs meet for the four-straight year and seventh time overall.
- Yale holds a 4-2 lead the all-time series following a 4-2 win in Williamsburg last season.
- The Bulldogs have won all three meetings in Williamsburg.
- In last season's setback, Finbar Talcott claimed one of the Tribe's two team points with a singles win at No. 4.
 
Scouting Penn
- Penn enters the weekend at 9-1 on the year, having won eight in a row. The Quakers were ranked No. 23 nationally in the first computer Oracle/ITA Rankings released on Wednesday.
- Last week, the Quakers won a trio of matches to claim the ECAC Championship for the first time since 2006-07. After topping Cornell, 4-0, in the first round, Penn downed Dartmouth and Harvard by 4-3 scores to win the title.  
- Max Cancilla clinched the championship with a three-set win at No. 6 singles. Kyle Mautner (No. 1), Edoardo Graziani (No. 2) and Dmitry Shatalin (No. 4) all went 3-0 in singles at the event to help the Quakers to the crown.
- Eight of Penn's nine matches this season and all of its victories have come at home. W&M and Penn have one common opponent to this point in Liberty, who the Quakers downed 6-1.
- Maunter is Penn's top player coming in at No. 54 nationally in singles. He is an impressive 18-4 overall and 8-1 at the No. 1 spot. At the ECAC Championship, he upset the No. 34-ranked player from Dartmouth.
- The freshman duo of Graziani and Kevin Zhu have been impressive at the top of the Quaker lineup. Graziani is 7-1 at the No. 2 position and 17-4 overall, while Zhu is 6-2 in dual-match play primarily at No. 3 and 15-7 overall. Graziani upset No. 72 Robertas Wrzensinski in the ECAC Championship win over Harvard.
- In doubles, Mautner and Shatalin hold down the No. 1 position. The duo is 5-4 at the top spot and 13-8 overall. Zhu and Graziani are 4-1 at No. 2 and 14-4 overall.
 
Series History: W&M vs. Penn
- W&M and Penn square off for the fifth-straight season.
- The Tribe welcomes Penn to Williamsburg for the second year in a row, third time in the last four years and fourth time overall.
- W&M leads the all-time series at 4-3 overall, including a 3-1 mark in Williamsburg.
- Last season, the Tribe topped Penn, 4-3. W&M won the doubles point with victories at the top two positions before receiving a trio of singles wins, including Sebastian Quiros' win at No. 6.
