W&M News and Notes
- All 13 meetings between W&M and Charleston have come since the Cougars joined the CAA during the 2013-14 season. Last year, CofC won two of the three meetings, and W&M's win came in the highest scoring game in Kaplan Arena history, 114-104, in overtime to close out the regular season. Over the last two years, junior
Nathan Knight is averaging 24.3 points in four games against the Cougars.
- Knight was named the CAA co-Player of the Week on Monday after recording his eighth double-double in last 11 games with 35 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots in a win at Elon. It was his third career award and first in 2018-19. It marked Knight's 11th double-double this season, which are the most for a W&M player since Todd Cauthorn has 11 in 1992-93. Knight will square off his fellow honoree, Grant Riller, on Thursday. Riller shared the weekly honors after averaging 38 points per game last week, including a Charleston record 43 vs. Hofstra.
- The Tribe has improved defensively in CAA play. W&M ranks fourth in defensive efficiency (106.1) in league games and has held five opponents to a point or less per possession. In comparison, the Tribe limited two opponents in the non-conference to a point or less per possession. W&M ranks second in 3-point percentage defense (.341) and field goal percentage defense (.444) in league games.
- In the win over Elon, the Tribe's junior class ran on all cylinders, scoring 72 of the team's 84 points. Along with Knight's 35 points, junior
Matt Milon scored 16 of his 19 in the second half, while
Justin Pierce turned in an 18-point, 12-rebound double-double. On the year, the trio has scored 60.6 percent of W&M's points and is averaging 47.6 points per game. All three rank among the top 20 in the CAA in scoring.
- Knight became the first player in W&M history to score 35 or more points in consecutive games. He tallied a career-high 39 points at Hofstra, which were the fifth most in program history and equaled the most ever scored by a Tribe player in a CAA game. The last W&M player to score more than 39 points in a game was Jeff Cohn when he tallied a school-record 49 points in 1961. Knight scored 35 points at Elon rank 18th in school history.
- On Feb. 8, Knight was selected as one of the top 10 candidates for the 2019 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award presented by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Named after Class of 1995 Hall of Famer and three-time NCAA Champion Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the annual honor in its fifth year recognizes the top centers in men's college basketball. A national committee comprising top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 21 candidates in October, which was whittled down to 10. Five finalists will be selected in March with the winner announced on April 12 with the other four members of the Naismith Starting 5.
- W&M is shooting it at a better clip in CAA play. After shooting 46.6 percent from the field in the non-conference, the Tribe has increased its shooting to 47.6 percent in league action. From 3-point range, the Tribe's percentage jumped from 31.7 percent in the non-conference to 37.1 percent in CAA play.
- Freshman
Chase Audige has come on strong in CAA play. In league action, he leads all rookies in scoring at 12.2 per game. Audige is adding 5.3 rebounds and three assists per game while shooting 41.8 percent from 3-point range in league contests. He is the first CAA freshman since 1992 to average 10 points, five rebounds and three assists per game in league action. His scoring average has increased to 10.3 points per game overall, which is 28th in the league and third among rookies. Audige has been named the CAA Rookie of the Week on three occasions this season.
- Knight has turned in an impressive stat line this season, averaging 20.5 points, 8.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.1 blocked shots per game. Since 1992, former No. 1 pick and NBA MVP Tim Duncan at Wake Forest in 1996-97 is the only player in college basketball with a season stat line of at least 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots per game. Knight has been even better in CAA games, averaging 21.6 points, 9.9 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game. Since 1992, no CAA player has averaged 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists per game in league action.
- W&M, which has led the CAA five of the last six years, once again tops the league in assists at 17 per game in 2018-19. That number also ranks 13th nationally. The Tribe is ninth in the country according to KenPom.com in assists percentage, recording an assist on 62.3 percent of its field goals.

- The Tribe dished out 20 or more assists on nine occasions this season, including six in CAA play, and is 6-3 in those contests. Over the last nine seasons, the Green and Gold is 43-5 when dishing out 20 or more assists.
- As a team, W&M leads the CAA in blocked shots at 4.7 per game, which also ranks 33rd nationally. In CAA play, the Tribe is blocking 5.4 shots per game. W&M owns the top two single-game blocked shot totals this season in the CAA with 14 against William Peace and 10 on Jan. 31 against Drexel.
