W&M News and Notes
- W&M opens the Colonial Athletic Association slate on the road for just the second time in the last eight years. The Green and Gold is just 15-20 all-time in CAA openers, but has won five of its last seven to start league play.
- Like its nonconference slate, the beginning of W&M's CAA schedule will be on the road. For the first time since joining the CAA, the Tribe will play its first three league games on the road. W&M is the only CAA team this season to play its first three conference games on the road after Charleston did it last season. The last time the Tribe played three straight road games to start conference play was in 1972-73 when it was part of the Southern Conference.
- The Tribe won eight nonconference games for the 13th time in program history, which ranks seventh in program history. It marks the fourth time in the last 27 years that W&M won eight nonconference games. The last time the Tribe posted more was when it tallied 10 nonconference wins in 1982-83.
- Seniors
Nathan Knight and
Andy Van Vliet have been double trouble for Tribe opponents. The duo ranks first and seventh nationally in double-doubles and are the only pair of teammates in the country with at least seven double-doubles apiece. Knight owns 10 in 13 games, while Van Vliet posted double-doubles in each of the last four games to bring his season total to seven. They have both tallied a double-double in the same game five times this season.
- Knight (19.9) and Van Vliet (14.7) average nearly 35 points per game between them. They are the only pair of teammates in the country to average at least 14 points and nine rebounds per game. Knight and Van Vliet have combined for more than 40 points on five occasions this season.
- W&M head coach
Dane Fischer was recently recognized by both ESPN and NCAA.com for the Tribe's success in the nonconference. NCAA.com writer Mike Lopresti ranked Fischer No. 8 on the list of first-year head coaches. ESPN's Jeff Borzello listed the Tribe head man among three coaches in his Mid-Major surprises as part of his first-year coaching scorecard. Fischer became just the third W&M head coach to start his career 4-0 and the first since Rube McCray in 1943-44. He is the first to win his first three road games.
- Knight and Van Vliet both rank among the top 30 nationally in rebounding. They are the only pairs of teammates averaging at 14 points and nine rebounds per game this season. Both players average 9.9 rebounds per game, which ranks second in the CAA and 27th nationally. They are tied for 21st nationally in total rebounds, respectively, while Van Vliet is sixth (8.2) in the country in defensive rebounds and Knight comes in at No. 9 (8.0), as of Dec. 28.
- Knight earned his second-straight CAA Player of the Week honor on Dec. 9. Knight averaged 17.5 points and 10 rebounds per game in wins over Old Dominion and at Fairfield. The previous week, he averaged 29 points and 11 rebounds per game to earn the honor, including 30 points at Buffalo. Knight ranks second in W&M history with five weekly honors, trailing only Marcus Thornton's six.
- With its victory at Fairfield on Dec. 8, the Tribe picked up its fourth road win, which ranks second nationally. It marks the sixth time in program history that W&M won four road games during the nonconference slate. It was just the fourth time since joining the CAA. They tied a school record with three-straight road wins to open the season, including snapping Wofford's 17-game home win streak, the fourth-longest in the country, on Nov. 12.
- Knight added another notable accolade to his resume, being selected to the Oscar Robertson Trophy by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, on Dec. 6. Earlier this season, he was named to the watch lists for both the Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award and the Lou Henson Mid-Major Player of the Year Award, presented by CollegeInsider.com. For the second-straight year, Knight was one of 20 players nationally named to the preseason watch list for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year award after being one of five finalists in 2019.
- In nine of its 13 games, the Tribe has outrebounded its opponent. W&M is 7-2 this season when it outrebounds its opponent and 39-17 over the last four seasons. The Tribe leads the CAA and ranks 59th nationally in rebounding margin (+5.8). W&M also leads the CAA in defensive rebounding % (78.3), which is 14th nationally.
- Junior
Luke Loewe is enjoying a breakout season, ranking among the national leaders in shooting. He leads the CAA in 3-point % (47.4) and ranks eighth in field goal % (53.3). According to KenPom.com, the 6-4 guard is 11th nationally in 3-point % against DI competition (51.4), 35th in true shooting % (67.4) and 39th in effective field goal % (65.9). Loewe doubled his previous career-high with 26 points in the win over Morehead State. He ranks 21st in the CAA at 11.4 points per game and is also 14th in the league in assists (2.4).
- Knight is one of four current D1 players with 1,700 career points and 700 career rebounds. This season, the 6-10 center moved into the program's top 10 in both scoring (8th at 1737 points) and rebounding (7th at 756). He is one of only two players in program history, along with Jeff Cohen (1958-61), to rank among the top 10 in both categories. Knight ranks 12th among active D1 players in rebounding, 14th in scoring and fifth in blocked shots. This season, he ranks 27th nationally in rebounding and 33rd in scoring.
- Graduate student
Bryce Barnes has emerged for the Tribe. He posted a career-high five steals with seven rebounds in the win over ODU. His driving lay-up with 3.8 seconds left gave W&M an 80-79 win at Wofford on Nov. 12. He followed by scoring 17 of his career-high 21 points in the first half of the win over Hampton. On three occasions this season, Barnes has posted a career-high tying seven assists. He ranks fourth in the CAA assists (4.4), fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8) and 10th in steals (1.4) and free throw % (81.3). He is 87th nationally in total assists.
