W&M News and Notes
- The Tribe closes out the nonconference slate by taking part in the DC Holiday Hoops Fest Showcase against reigning Northeast Conference regular season champion St. Francis (Pa.). The event is being played in the Entertainment & Sports Arena, which is also the sight of the 2020 Colonial Athletic Association Championship.

- W&M is 4-1 all-time against teams from the Northeast Conference, which was founded in 1981. The Tribe plays its first NEC opponent since 2007 when it completed a home-and-home series with a trip to Wagner.

- The Tribe owns eight nonconference wins for the 13th time in program history. The total ranks seventh in W&M history. On only six occasions, the Tribe has posted nine or more nonconference wins, the last time coming in 1982-83 when W&M won 10 nonconference games.

- Seniors Nathan Knight and Andy Van Vliet have been double trouble for Tribe opponents. The duo ranks first and 11th nationally in double-doubles and are the only pair of teammates in the country with at least six double-doubles apiece. Knight owns nine in the Tribe's 12 games, while Van Vliet posted double-doubles in each of W&M's last three games to bring his season total to six. Knight (19.9) and Van Vliet (14.6) average nearly 35 points per game between them and have combined for more than 40 points on five occasions this season.

- W&M head coach Dane Fischer was recently recognized by both ESPN and NCAA.com for the Tribe's success in the nonconference. NCAA.com writer Mike Lopresti ranked Fischer No. 8 on the list of first-year head coaches. ESPN's Jeff Borzello listed the Tribe head man among three coaches in his Mid-Major surprises as part of his first-year coaching scorecard.

- Knight and Van Vliet both rank among the top 40 nationally in rebounding. They are one of only three pairs of teammates averaging at least 9.5 rebounds per game this season. Knight ranks second in the CAA and 31st nationally at 9.9 per contest, while Van Vliet is third in the league and 36th nationally at 9.8 per game. Knight and Van Vliet are 18th and 20th nationally in total rebounds, respectively, while Van Vliet is eighth (8.2) in the country in defensive rebounds and Knight comes in at No. 12 (8.0), as of Dec. 20.

- Knight earned his second-straight CAA Player of the Week honor on Dec. 9. Knight averaged 17.5 points and 10 rebounds per game in wins over Old Dominion and at Fairfield. The previous week, he averaged 29 points and 11 rebounds per game to earn the honor, including 30 points at Buffalo. Knight ranks second in W&M history with five weekly honors, trailing only Marcus Thornton's six. Following his fifth-straight double-double vs. Goucher, Knight was named to the CAA's honor roll list on Monday.

- With its victory at Fairfield on Dec. 8, the Tribe picked up its nation-leading fourth road win. It marks the sixth time in program history that W&M won four road games during the non-conference slate. It is just the fourth time since joining the CAA that it accomplished the feat. They tied a school record with three-straight road wins to open the season, including snapping Wofford's 17-game home win streak, the fourth-longest in the country, on Nov. 12.

- Knight added another notable accolade to his resume, being selected to the Oscar Robertson Trophy by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, on Dec. 6. Earlier this season, he was named to the watch lists for both the Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award and the Lou Henson Mid-Major Player of the Year Award, presented by CollegeInsider.com. For the second-straight year, Knight was one of 20 players nationally named to the preseason watch list for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year award after being one of five finalists in 2019.

- In eight of its 12 games, the Tribe has outrebounded its opponent. W&M is 7-1 this season when it outrebounds its opponent and 39-16 over the last four seasons. The Tribe leads the CAA and ranks 58th nationally in rebounding margin (+5.6). W&M also leads the CAA in defensive rebounding % (78.4), which is 13th nationally.

- Junior Luke Loewe is enjoying a breakout season, ranking among the national leaders in shooting. He ranks second in the CAA in 3-point % (47.1) and fifth in field goal % (53.7). According to KenPom.com, the 6-4 guard is 16th nationally in 3-point % against DI competition (51.6), 35th in true shooting % (68.2) and 42nd in effective field goal % (66.2). Loewe doubled his previous career-high with 26 points in the win over Morehead State. He ranks 20th in the CAA at 11.3 points per game and is also 14th in the league in assists (2.5).

- Knight is one of three current D1 players with 1,700 career points and 700 career rebounds. This season, the 6-10 center moved into the program's top 10 in both scoring (8th at 1722 points) and rebounding (7th at 746). He is one of only two players in program history, along with Jeff Cohen (1958-61), to rank among the top 10 in both categories. Knight ranks 13th among active D1 players in rebounding, 14th in scoring and fifth in blocked shots. This season, he ranks 31st nationally in both rebounding and scoring.

- Graduate student Bryce Barnes has emerged for the Tribe. He posted a career-high five steals with seven rebounds in the win over ODU. His driving lay-up with 3.8 seconds left gave W&M an 80-79 win at Wofford on Nov. 12. He followed by scoring 17 of his career-high 21 points in the first half of the win over Hampton. On three occasions this season, Barnes has posted a career-high tying seven assists. He ranks fourth in the CAA in both assists (4.5) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8). He is 97th nationally in assists per game.

- Dane Fischer became just the third W&M head coach to start his career 4-0 and the first since Rube McCray in 1943-44. He is the first to win his first three road games.
