W&M News and Notes
- The Tribe faces an Atlantic 10 Conference opponent for the 11th-straight season and 17th in the last 19 campaigns. Last season, W&M played a trio of A-10 foes, including an 87-85 win over Saint Joseph's in Williamsburg. The Tribe rallied from a 20-point second-half deficit to win on a
Nathan Knight hook shot with 1.7 seconds remaining.
- W&M head coach
Dane Fischer was recently recognized by both ESPN and NCAA.com for the Tribe's success in the nonconference. NCAA.com writer Mike Lopresti ranked Fischer No. 8 on the list of first-year head coaches. ESPN's Jeff Borzello listed the Tribe head man among three coaches in his Mid-Major surprises as part of his first-year coaching scorecard.
- The Tribe has ratcheted up the defense recently. In two of the last three games, W&M held its opponent to less than 30% shooting. After holding ODU to 28.6%, the program's best mark since 2014, W&M limited Goucher to 22.4%, the best since 1996. The Tribe has held each of its last three opponent to less than 60 points and foes are averaging just 44.7 points per game during that stretch. It marks the first time W&M limited three-straight foes to less than 60 points since 2010. The last time the Tribe held four consecutive foes to less than 60 was before the advent of the shot clock in 1984. The Tribe's 30-point defensive effort vs. Goucher was the program's best since 1981.
- Senior
Nathan Knight earned his second-straight CAA Player of the Week honor on Dec. 9. Knight averaged 17.5 points and 10 rebounds per game in wins over Old Dominion and at Fairfield. The previous week, he averaged 29 points and 11 rebounds per game to earn the honor, including 30 points at Buffalo. Knight ranks second in W&M history with five weekly honors, trailing only Marcus Thornton's six. Following his fifth-straight double-double vs. Goucher, Knight was named to the CAA's honor roll list on Monday.
- With its victory at Fairfield, the Tribe picked its nation-leading fourth road win. It marks the sixth time in program history that W&M won four road games during the non-conference slate. It is just the fourth time since joining the CAA that it accomplished the feat. They tied a school record with three-straight road wins to open the season, including snapping Wofford's 17-game home win streak, the fourth-longest in the country, on Nov. 12.
- As of Dec. 17, the Tribe has the sixth-best improvement nationally in the Ken Pomeroy rating since the start of the 2019-20 season. After beginning the year at No. 251, W&M improved to No. 167. The improvement trails only Stephen F. Austin (125 spots to No. 174), Northern Colorado (93 to No. 151), Delaware (90 to No. 166), Charlotte (90 to No. 173) and Bryant (89 to No. 238).
- Knight added another notable accolade to his resume, being selected to the Oscar Robertson Trophy by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, on Dec. 6. Earlier this season, he was named to the watch lists for both the Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award and the Lou Henson Mid-Major Player of the Year Award, presented by CollegeInsider.com. For the second-straight year, Knight was one of 20 players nationally named to the preseason watch list for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year award after being one of five finalists in 2019.
