W&M News and Notes
- Monday night marks the program's sixth game against the Big 12 since it began in 1996. The Tribe has faced Texas Tech (2001), Kansas State (2006), Missouri (2011), West Virginia (2013) and TCU (2017). It is the first meeting between the Tribe and Sooners

- With its win over Hampton on Friday, the Tribe started the season 4-0 for just the 10th time in the 115-year history of the program. It is the first time W&M is 4-0 since 1992 and just the second time in the last 60 years. The Tribe has only started 5-0 three times in school history with the last coming in 1948-49.

- The Tribe leads the country in road wins with three. W&M tied a school record with three-straight road wins to open the season. In its most recent road win on Nov. 12, the Green and Gold snapped Wofford's 17-game home court win streak, which was the fourth-longest in the country.

- Dane Fischer is just the third W&M head coach to start his career 4-0 and the first since Rube McCray in 1943-44. He is the first to win his first three road games. No Tribe head coach has ever started his career 5-0.

- Fischer is one of only three (out of the 58 DI head coaches hired in 2019) to sport a 4-0 record this season along with San Francisco's Todd Golden and Virginia Tech's Mike Young, as Nov. 17.

- In each of the first four games, senior Nathan Knight has recorded a double-double, averaging 18.5 points and 11.8 rebounds per game. He leads the country with four double-doubles and has recorded one in five-straight games dating back to last season. Knight ranks among the top five in the CAA in rebounds (2nd) and scoring (4th). He is 18th nationally in rebounding, and his 26 career double-doubles rank sixth among active NCAA DI players.

- Defense has been the Tribe's calling card in 2019-20. W&M is limiting opponents to 37.9% shooting from the floor. The Green and Gold is third in the CAA in both defensive field goal % and scoring defense (67.5). The Tribe ranks 48th nationally, according to KenPom.com, in effective field goal % defense (42.7) and 35th in the country in 2-point field goal % defense (40.1).

- Senior Andy Van Vliet has made a significant impact after sitting out last season as a transfer from Wisconsin. The 7-footer ranks third in the CAA in rebound (9.5) and fifth in scoring (17.3). He has demonstrated his versatility with his ability to score inside and outside, shooting 57.1% from the field and 43.8% from 3-point range, averaging nearly two triples per game. He has produced two double-double in his last three games, including carer-highs of 22 points and 12 rebounds vs. Hampton.

- In each of the last two wins, the Tribe shot better than 54% from the field, including 56.4% at Wofford and 54.5% vs. Hampton. Over that stretch, the Tribe is shooting 46.7% from 3 (21-of-45). On the year, W&M leads the CAA and ranks 33rd nationally in field goal shooting (50.4%) and also ranks second in the CAA in 3-point shooting (40.2%). The Tribe is 27th nationally in effective field goal % (57.8).

- Graduate student Bryce Barnes has emerged on the offensive end for the Tribe. He turned down a ball screen, crossed over his defender and scored on a driving lay-up with 3.8 seconds left to give W&M its 80-79 win at Wofford on Nov. 12. He followed by scoring 17 of his career-high 21 points in the first half of the Tribe's win over Hampton. Barnes tied a career-high with seven assists against the Pirates. He ranks third in the CAA in assists (5.5) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.44). His 22 total assists are 33rd nationally.

- The Tribe's 16-point comeback at American, on Nov. 8, equaled the program's largest on the road in the last 30 years. Trailing 24-8, the Tribe held AU to 0.77 points per possession (44) over the final 31 minutes. The Eagles shot just 31.4% shooting from the field (16-of-51) and only 4-of-17 from 3 (23.5%) over that stretch.

- In each of its first four wins, the Tribe has outrebounded its opponent. W&M ranks second in the CAA in rebounding margin at +6.5. The Tribe is 36-15 over the last four seasons when outrebounding its opponent.

- Knight's list of preseason accolades continued to grow last week as he was named to the watch lists for both the Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award and the Lou Henson Mid-Major Player of the Year Award, presented by CollegeInsider.com. A two-time Lou Henson All-American as a finalist for the award in both 2018 and 2019, Knight was one of only 40 players in the country to earn a spot on the Lute Olson Watch List. He was one of 50 players to earn a spot on the Lou Henson Award Watch List.

- For the second-straight year, Knight was one of 20 players nationally named to the preseason watch list for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year award presented by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Last season, the 6-10 bigman was selected as one of five finalists for the honor.

- Knight is a name to know nationally. Recently, he was listed on Jay Bilas' top 10 players you should know in college basketball. He was named one of the top 20 bigmen in college basketball by Brian Bennett of The Athletic. Andy Katz of the NCAA March Madness listed Knight as one of the 20 most-exciting players in the country and No. 19 on the list of the top-25 seniors in college basketball. NBC Sports' Rob Dauster (No. 71) and Stadium's Jeff Goodman (No. 86) ranked the Tribe center as one of the top 100 players in the country.
