WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary men's tennis team kicks off the home portion of the dual-match slate on Saturday when it hosts its first of two straight against the Ivy League. The Tribe takes on Princeton at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 3 p.m.
Fans can watch all the Tribe tennis action at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center via PlaySight. Scouting the Tribe
- The Tribe has won 10-straight home openers, dating back to 2008, including all three under head coach
Jeff Kader.
- Saturday is the first of four home contests against Ivy League competition during the month of February. The Tribe also hosts Brown next week on Feb. 10, before welcoming Yale and Penn to Willamsburg on Feb. 23 and 24.
-The Tribe, which sits at 0-3 on the year, opened the 2019 dual-match season with three-straight Power Conference opponents. It marked the first time the Tribe played three in a row since 2013 and the first time W&M opened the season with three straight since 1993.
- The matches against #4 Florida and Louisville, who finished last year ranked No. 49 nationally, were part of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. It marked the second time W&M competed in the national event.
- Sophomores Sebastian Qurios and
Finbar Talcott both posted nationally-ranked singles wins during the Tribe's opening three dual-matches of the season. Quiros knocked off No. 38-ranked Gianni Ross of Virginia in three-sets, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2. It was W&M's highest ranked dual-match singles win since 2010. Quiros leads W&M with a 12-7 singles mark.
- Talcott topped No. 104-ranked Brandon Lancaster of Louisville, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 2 on Sunday for his first career ranked win. He also jumped out to a set advantage over Florida's No. 37-ranked Andy Andrade, before the match was abandoned with the team result decided. He owns seven wins on the year and is 1-1 for W&M at No. 2.
- W&M also competed in the Virginia Tech Invitational, Jan. 19-21. The Green and Gold won three of the top six singles spots against all three opponents, Middle Tennessee, Penn State and Virginia Tech. W&M also took three of four doubles matches against the Blue Raiders and host Hokies.
- Against Virginia Tech, the Tribe posted nationally-ranked wins at the top two doubles spots. Senior
Tristan Bautil and Talcott upended No. 43-ranked team of Alex Ribeiro and Henrik Korsgaard, 7-5, while junior
Brenden Volk and sophomore
Chen Ruo rolled to a 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot, downing the No. 42-ranked Hokies pair of Carlo Donato and Mitch Harper.
- W&M finished last season ranked No. 73 nationally. It was the Tribe's highest end of the year ranking since 2008. The Green and Gold was also ranked No. 6 in the ITA Atlantic Region in 2018.
Scouting Princeton
- Princeton opened season with a doubleheader sweep of Liberty, 6-1, and Army, 7-0, on Jan. 27.
- The Tigers travel to Old Dominion on Friday, before heading to Williamsburg. They face Norfolk State at 10 a.m. and take on the Tribe at 3 p.m.
- Princeton's lineup features a pair of nationally-ranked singles players in No. 82 Karl Poling and No. 91 Damian Rodriquez. Poling is 10-2 on the year, while Rodriquez, who advanced to the ITA Northeast Region Quarterfinals, owns an 8-4 mark.
- Will Peters leads the team with 13 singles wins, including a 1-1 mark in dual-match play competing at No. 3 and No. 4.
- Two Tigers teams earned ITA National Rankings in doubles. Ryan Seggerman and Rodriquez are ranked No. 39 nationally with a 7-3 record. Bill Duo and Justin Barki are one spot behind at No. 40 and own a 6-2 mark.
- Last year, Princeton finished the season at 18-11 overall and 3-4 in Ivy League play. The Tigers capped the year ranked No. 53 nationally and No. 5 in the ITA Northeast Region.
Series History: W&M vs. Princeton
- Princeton holds a 3-2 advantage in the all-time series with wins in the last three meetings between the teams.
- The teams will play for the fourth time in the last six years.
- The Tribe won meetings with Princeton in 1999 (4-3) and 2002 (6-1).
- The Tigers have won the last three, including victories in 2014 (4-3), 2015 (6-1) and 2017 (6-1).
- Saturday will be Princeton's third trip to Williamsburg. W&M won the 2002 edition in Williamsburg, while the Tigers tallied a 4-3 triumph in 2014.
